500.00 vintage De Rosa purchase-Good news and Bad news
So a gent i was riding with yesterday said he had a De Rosa that he didnt want anymore(being steal and obsolete-he knew i loved vintage bikes). He only wanted 500.00 for it which got me very excited. So i went over to his house and he pulled it out of his garage and-low and behold-it was and exact copy of the De Rosa i already owned-same color same decals even the same dura ace group. well, not exactly the same since mine is a 54 and his was a 56. Not being too picky(and not too dumb) i graciously grabbed it and handed him the cash. Now, im not too sure why i need two identical De Rosas but it is kind of a nice feeling ps the one in front is my new one-in the back is my old one

Riding like its 1990
De Rosa and Bad news don't belong in the same thread title. I think you should be punished.
Give me the bike.

excellent purchase. they are not alike one has blue handlebar tape, yello cables and blue pedals. the other has blue and white tape white cables and pedals. clearly they are different bikes and both keepers

Joe - do you have any good detail pics of the dropout junctions on these bikes (both from the side and the back of the bike)? Might be instructive. Also, do they have the diamante stays? Hard to tell from the pics.

They both look like Professional SLXs.
The newer acquisition looks like a Ferrari red 1989 or 1990 I had last summer.
The 54cm looks like a 1988 with the chrome fork crown.
Somewhat easier to tell by brake bridges as well, if you have a shot.
I have a 1989 Professional, as well as a 35th Anniversario and I still make dumbo id mistakes though.

ok. i will get some pics of those, i do notice that the brake bridges are different. my 54 has a well,,,,hard to describe...ill just take some pics. and i think it is an 89 as the guy i got it from still had the original receipt which he gave me. he bought it from hendricksons cycles in santa barbara on 5/15/89 for 948.00 just the frame and fork. he told me that he put on the dura ace from another bike he had which would account for the "older" 6 speed group which is on the bike now. im hoping someone will trade me a red one for it!!

.......and it is very red.
Edit: Actually, I don't think she does have "diamond" stays. I was thinking of the one we sold this summer. I don't remember seeing the Diamante stays on models from roughly 1988 until a return in the early 90s.

Is the one with the yellow cables and straight bridge older than the other one? They are both great bikes

I think the dropout transitions and points are much more elegantly done on the bike in the lower photos. Though the style is the same in both cases, which is one thing I was curious about.

thanks much. the one with the yellow cables is my "older" one. the one in the top pics is the one i just picked up the other day. its the 56cm. dont know why de rosa changed styling in just two years-quicker, cheaper? dont know. but there are those subtle differences.

They are both '86 or newer given the lack of chainstay bridge.
The yellow cable one is probably an '86 given the chrome fork crown. Is the seatstay cap panto vertical or horizontal lettering??
86-88 on both if they have diamante stays as well...
