Anybody else not heard of this before?
I think you missed reading it here before, this forum is where I first heard about it..... One thing to note though, while it cleans rust off, it does not restore the weather seal. So you need a further treatment to restore the weather seal, which depends on the part, some parts can be waxed, others can be lubricated, still others can be painted or clear coated. Rims with rusted braking surfaces should be replaced.

Oh, yeah - me too! I've heard of this process but there's just no way I'll be able to add it to my restoration techniques list. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Okay, I'm off to fix a puncture in one of my tyres...

right. To get a similair reaction from me is to mention showing on one of those small bouncy rubber balls. Sends shivers down my spine.

Maybe just me, but I haven't noticed it making any sound. Or at least no different than if you used sandpaper, a brass brush, etc.

But just imagining the sound makes me cringe. Imagine how easy and inevitable it would be for me to imagine the sound while I was actually doing it.

I'll stick with OA thankyouverymuch. The thought of any abrasive, and don't kid yourself, the aluminum foil IS abrasive, on chrome is just....icky.

When you can turn this:

Into this:

And not touch it with the first bit of steel wool, aluminum foil or any such thing....that's the ticket.

You really think that aluminum foil can scratch chrome?

No, but chrome that's close to flaking off can be flaked off by scrubbing it with Aluminum foil. Why take the chance when there is a totally non-destructive method to remove the rust?

Ya, I tried aluminum foil on chrome. I had to dip my fingers in oil to stop the shivers. I don't mind foil or rust but together, worse than a chalkboard.

What do you use to restore the weather seal? E.g. chromed fork ends with rust that have been cleaned?

Weather seal? Spray it with Future floor wax through an airbrush. It works a wonder on model cars and is very long-lasting as long as you never wash it with dish detergent or anything with ammonia in it (like glass cleaner).

What is this "weather seal" of which you speak?

Yes if chrome is rusted, then there are either pinholes or micro-cracks in the chrome, and that needs to be sealed once treated, to keep water out otherwise it will just rust again, and it doesn't take long. Wax is one option, I would probably use car wax to help seal up chrome. Of course it depends on the part, you wouldn't want to use wax on say chrome rims and probably you want to be careful around handle bars that might be gripped, but it's fine for that nice shiny derailleur part. Another option is clear coat, cromed fork ends, I would give them a shot of clear-coat to keep them from rusting again. If it's a bolt on hub, put some grease on the thread, and let the grease seal the water out, on the connections.

I just ordered a pound off ebay. Way easier than driving around town and having some kid at the hardware store tell me he doesnt know what Oxalic Acid or wood bleach is. Well, he actually says "no, we dont have it" but i know what he really means.
