I don't think Southpaw would mind if I answered that it is the original Specialties TA Criterium crank with the larger chainring removed. It was a half-step setup. 50/45 or 52/45, I can't recall.

Here are a couple more... Raleigh Supercourse mixte and a 24" wheeled Kuwahara that my daughters have outgrown.

I have one 1x7 with a wide range Freewheel and a rapid rise RD that I use a rapid fire shifter with and I love it for trail riding. I use it to get me into the thick when searching for fresh water ponds to fish. I also built up a bike for a friends wife out of spare parts that's 1x7. ( I post more pics of this bike then any other I own) I have beat on my fishing bike pretty hard when not loaded and I never had the chain come off, I am running a FMF BMX crank with a 3/32" ring. I set it up like this so I would be able to down shift fast when riding uneven terrain.

I have a friend that raced tri's on a 1x7, ran a 56t front ring, 14-28 rear.
The chain came off the front a lot, either on bumps or sudden shifts.

Nope, don't mind at all, except it's a little different than that. It has the original TA cranks (pro 5 vis), but the original Criterium double (52/45) chainring set was swapped out for a single outer chainring (45T).

I love that photo, especially with the log cabin as backdrop! You have some of the most elegant bikes on this forum.

that torpado is nice! what are the black things in the spokes near the hubs?

i had my fd off my commuter all summer (still do). seems like the chain falls off a lot when on the big chainring, on the small not at all. had considered building a 1x5 bike, really like the way it looks, but that chain issue made me wonder.

It's a work in progress but I got the bars, stem and grips in the mail so I can ride it. Bars and grips came through Amazon. Stem is a cheap Kalloy but it has the right length and bar clamp size. Saddle is a stand in for now, not sure what to put on it as I have mostly racy type saddles.
Also need to get matching brake levers and some matching tires with sidewalls but I think the spending light is off for now. I'll just have fun for awhile.

The Frejus and Torpado are beautiful! What kind of derailleur is on the Frejus? It looks similar to a Cambio Roubaix, but with the derailleur part on the bottom so it doesn't have to be backpedaled to shift. Am I even close?

Edit: After looking at it more, I see it's not even close to the Cambio Roubaix. The rod isn't connected to the quick release. the derailleur provides the chain tension. Please enlighten me !

Great thread. I may try this on my extra Trek 660 frame -- 53x13-21 5-speed freewheel.

The pulley is on a spring and moves up and down to keep tension. Nice in theory, but I have yet to have it shift while pedaling. More pictures here.

Here is a temporary bike I built for my girlfriend. I am in the process of trying to unload it right now. It's 1x7 friction, 26 in wheel, short person touring bike (you can see by the length of seatpost showing... I'm 5'4 and that's at a good height for me...). Really fun project and a suuuuuper cushy ride. The front derailleur is merely acting as a chain catcher. This setup doesn't like bumps and sudden wide changes in gears.

I forget how nice it is to ride on an MTB/Touring frame with really wide tires. Riding over bumps doesn't feel like getting kicked in the nuts.

None except for looks. I know because I ran a rear derailleur for my chain tensioner on my single speed mountain bike for over two years. It was ridden hard and it never gave me any problems.
