Pictures again - 70 Peugeot

Here is my Peugeot. I believe it is a '70 or '71. The previous owner painted it all black (including the chrome which was in bad shape) and had various brazeons added. It also had all Campy components. I have replaced the Campy stuff with as many French components as I could find at reasonable prices. I kept the Campy derailleurs and shifters as they work better with the tapped out derailleur hanger, brazed on cable guides and brazed on shifter bosses. I did the lug painting and lug outlining myself. Decals are all new reproductions. I am working on an all French wheel set to finish off this bike:

I love old Peugeots and yours is gorgeous. I am wondering, though, how much of the seat post is actually fitted into the seat tube lug. Looks to be dangerously high to me.

Also, when I painted my PX10, the only color I could even consider was white, with black Nervex lugs. I do wish I had seen black first!

After seeing this you have to wonder why they didn't offer the color combination back then.
It is a beautiful machine surely. (You should shorten that right brake cable housing just a little to mirror the left side though)

BTW - What happens when it meets up a white PX10?
Is it like matter and anti-matter?
- maybe you should send these photo's to Stephen Hawkings?

I have 3 1/2" of insertion, about an 1" beyond the minimum insertion marking. I usually size my frames so that the seat posts have about 3-3 1/2" of insertion, which is usually 1/2-1" beyond the minimum marking. I believe that to be safe. I think the visual effect may be more of an issue of the angle of the picture?

Cyclomondo. The decals are a set of late '60s-'70 decals, plus a French 531 decal set from the '60s-'70s plus the Nervex pro decal. I took the decal plan from a picture of a '69-'70 PX10E on one of the vintage Peugeot sites.

I just noticed BD63, the black contrast paint in the front derailleur clamp and rear outer cage plate. Did you do that or did they come that way? Looks cool.

I did the detail painting on the rear derailleur body and front derailleur clamp. And the shift levers. I like to do some unique touches with detail painting.

The wheels are 700c Rigida 1320 rims laced to Campy Record high flange hubs. The hubs are period correct but not French of course. I have a set of Normandy Luxe Competition hubs that I think will clean up alright. I will probably lace them to a pair of Mavic Championnat du Monde tubular rims.

Looks great! Love the color scheme! If I had to nitpick I'd rather see a Stronglight headset, Mafac front cable hanger and for the rear brake housing to be bit shorter. Clips and straps to come? I've been using those VO Grand Cru straps and they are very nice. They shouldn't even sell the non-laminated ones anymore; there's no comparison.

Maybe black leather wrap and Velox plugs.

No go on the Stronglight headset or the correct hanger, unless I can find a new fork. When I got this bike it came with a Specialized headset and sidepull brakes. So I immediately set out to install the correct parts. Unfortunately I found that the Specialized headset was running without any spacers and that the lock nut was only engaging about 2 turns. And it was a short stack height headset already. The fork was really too short. So definitely no room for the usual cable hanger arrangement, where the hanger acts as a spacer, and definitely no room for a Stronglight headset which has a pretty high stack height. In fact I had to grind down the existing top cup to get a safer engagement on the locknut. I didn't think I could grind it down anymore or machine the head tube or fork crown enough to get the 5mm needed for the cable hanger. I may revisit that sometime but I took a quick solution and installed a V O cable hanger that clamps onto the stem above the locknut. I don't really like the look but it works well.

I will adjust the cable lengths. I guess I really don't notice that myself as people keep calling me on it

Clips and straps to come. I had just put on the Atom pedals (had campy on before) and hadn't moved the clips yet. Probably simple white nylon straps.

I don't really like the Fizik soft touch tape I have on it. It is really fragile and gets dirty really easily. Probably will replace it with leather.

It looks great as is, but I'm sure you can fit a Stronglight P3 AND a Mafac hanger on there if you got the VO headset on there. The P3 has a stack height about 8mm shorter than the VO. I have a short stack height French headset I'd offer you, but it's a cheap one from the 80s and not suitable for that fine machine. Please don't take this personally. I think your bikes are gems; very, very nice!

Well I think you may be right. I took a look at it again. I don't have the V O headset I have the Specialized headset that came with it. But it has a stack height, if I am measuring correctly, of 39-40mm. The Stronglight P3 is supposed to have a stack height of 33mm. Which should give me space for the hanger. I guess I will be on the lookout for a French thread Stronglight P3 headset.

Simple and cheap - Rustoleum white for the lugs and Testors gold for the lining. Won't last forever but I can easily touch it up when it wears.

They're not historically correct (a decade newer give or take), but I have a pair of Simplex shifters that'd look fantabulous on your PX. Just like these:

Very "deco", and relatively uncommon. (Oh, and they don't have the "lost motion" (slop) that Campy's have.) (And they're braze-on, unlike the pic.) Let me know if you're interested.

ps - tres cool bike, btw. Good thing it's so small...

This bike is awesome. The detailling you did on the shifters, derailleus, etc, looks great! Very nice touch.
