Scott Sawtooth

Yesterday was a fun day and I'd completely forgot that I'd bid on some bike junk at our local university surplus sale. Really I was bidding on a Scott Sawtooth mtb that definitely needs some work but looked in decent shape. What had really caught my eye was the mid-fork braze ons for a rack. Well, I got the call this morning that I had won the pile of stuff for $17.50 (which probably was too much but I thought I was lowballing and wouldn't win anyway).

The bike is missing the handlebars and looks to have a replacment stem. The shifters and brake levers are there. Lower end Shimano components - Altus on the rear. It does have an Avocet Touring saddle (that needs to be recovered). Suzue hubs, Suntour U-brake and Shimano cantis on the fork. Sugino VP triple alloy crank but SR left crank arm.

I'll take some photos this afternoon - not much to look at right now and it's behind the shop trying to stay out of the snow.

Also included in the pile of stuff was a cheap mtb frame with a Sakae SX triple alloy crankset with SR Sakae Ovaltech chain rings. Early metal SIS derailleurs are on this bike. I'll save the BB, stem, etc. and junk the frame.

There were couple of wheels I'll hang onto for now - Weinmann 519 26" with what appears to be a Shimano cassette hub (7 speeds) and a no-name black 26" rim with a Quando hub. There's also a wheel with a 6 sp Shimano HG20 on it that I'll save.

Some photos - looks like a parts bike. The frame is too small. Interesting that it's tig welded at the head tube and a combination of lug and tig welding at the seat/top tube. Decent bike overall. It's shining up nicely and would make a good commuter for a shorter person - I'm 5'9" and have almost 2" of clearance to the crotch.

Cool, that's the first Sawtooth I've seen (and I've seen several) that isn't a sickly shade of green. This one was at the flea market a couple of years ago:

I've seen that seat tube lug on several other brands of MTB, it's not the prettiest joint...

Are those extra spokes stored on the drive side chainstay? If so seems kind of risky, if your chain drops hard, your spokes would be a mess.

Yep, those are spare spokes. I've seen them on the non-drive side on some touring bikes, but I don't think it's uncommon to have them on the drive side.

The spokes are tensioned in place with nipples out of the picture.
I wish there was a bolt on accessory to do this but I guess it needs to be brazed in order to keep a tension.

Also, that chainstay :-O.
You could fit a fire extinguisher in there.

I hadn't even paid attention to that - but there are three spokes on this one also.

The stem is a strange one. I noticed when I pulled it out tonight that it is marked 22mm. Sure enough the calipers measure that also. Is that a standard measurement for 80's mtb's?
