weird shimano part

So I got a big box of parts today (yay trash can diving) and among mostly crap (shimano thunderbird derailleur, shimano 50, etc. etc) there was a piece it looks like a hook that maybe attached to the rear dropout. it is marked 3.3.3 SHIMANO, no camera or I would take a picture. Just wondering what it is.

Single ring or double? If it's a single ring setup I have an old Peugeot 'swoopy mixte' that could use it!

unfortunately it is a double ring :/ too bad it won't work, has some sweet christophe special toe clips on it with the original leather straps. you could always take the 42t ring off, I'm just going to put these up on Ebay but I would be down to trade for something if you want them.

I had an old Columbia 10 speed in the 70's that had one of those over the rear derailleur. The manual described it as a 'curb guard'. So basically a 'bash guard' is what its for.
Most guys just tossed those to save weight.
