Help me pick some rims
I'm building "new" wheels for my 1987 Guerciotti. It's SLX, equipped with first generation C-Record. I never had the original hubs or wheels.
I recently acquired some 32h hubs courtesy of our very own @gomango, and am trying to decide on a direction. These will be clinchers, as I am totally clueless on tubulars. The current trend is much wider rims, up to 23mm for road use, and I am intrigued by classic stylings of the H plus son TB14. But that might be more rim than I need, since I've always run 23mm tires on this. 25s fit, but only if installed deflated in the rear.
Anyhow, go that route or get some NOS or gently used campagnolo or ambrosio? Anyone ridden the TB14?

The TB 14's are great. If you run a 25mm Veloflex Master on them you will get a superb ride and they will probably fit inflated.
Here's some built on old Record hubs spaced for 7 speed.
I have them on 10 speed hubs as well and have lots of miles on them.

I put new Pacenti rims on my Lemond, building the wheels myself. The tires are tight.

I love the TB-14s... I put them on my Paramount with high-flange Campy hubs (as above), though I run them with Continental Grand Prix Classic 25s. I'll likely be putting H+Son on my '86 Peloton when I get to that point. Very high-quality stuff.

Another vote for TB14's. Built up easily, no touch ups in over 5000 miles.
A benefit of wider rims like these is that any mounted tire will have slightly greater interior volume (and width), while not increasing diameter. So if you have clearance issues, you'll be able to run lower pressures.

How do you like the Continental Grand Prix Classic's? I Love the way they look but found the ride much harsher than the 4000's more akin to Gatorskins.

Hmmm, I run mine at 80/90 psi F/R and have had them on two different bikes. They never felt that much different from my 4000's to me.

While I haven't built up TB14's, I certainly would love to do so soon. In Canada, it's always been more cost effective to just go with Mavic rims. My favourite wheelset is my fixed gear set that are Mavic Open Sports laced to Gran Compe Small Flange hubs.
Now, if I had to choose between Mavic Open Pro's and TB14's (given that they're in a similar price range), I'd go TB14's for the width bonus and aesthetic.
It also comes down to price: Mavic Open Sports (now Elite's) are great value and lace up nicely, but if you're willing to shell out a bit more, treat yourself to the TB14's!

I've still got pretty limited tire experience, and these were my first "high-dollar" tires. Previously I'd been almost entirely on Paselas or, for commute purposes, Michelin Protek or City. So in my world the GPCs were a glorious step up from mediocrity. I quite like them.
