As many of you do, I haunt the Bike section on Craigslist. I've been looking for a beater frame to try out different stuff on. Ideally I want to do a 3-speed hub with a 2-cog rear derailleur setup. Today I spotted a navy Peugeot frameset. The first thing I look at is the shifters. No stem shifters for me. Even with the worst blurry photo, you can usually tell where the shifters are, but this one included a nice shot showing Simplex alloy downtube shifters and a Mangalite sticker. Since I happened to be in the area I phone-tagged my way to a meet-up with the guy, eyeballed the machine briefly (no bent fork, headset and BB spin freely) and offered a Jackson. He said he was just glad to be keeping it out of the landfill. A perusal of retropeugeot leads me to believe this is a 1983 UO14 (anybody want to chime in?) in 23". The bad news: The stem bolt is long gone but the stem doesn't move. Uh-oh. The Peugeot-branded Simplex rear mech is missing its wheels and back plate. One of the Mafac Racer brakes is gone. All in all, not that bad. These things shouldn't be too easy, should they?

That 86bcd crankset (probably Stronglight 99 branded Peugeot) is quite useful to set up as a compact double.

Is there a freewheel for that, or a 5/6/7 speed with a lot of spacers?

Yes-UO14-nice ride. I used to have one, love the dt shifters. Mine had the concave weinmans.

Freewheel? I have no idea how to make it happen. I was thinking of using 2 single cog freewheel with a BB cup to hold them together, or maybe rebuilding something... who knows.

We need to buddy up on snagging bikes... you take the SE part of the state, I'll take the NW part. LOL
