Early Gios Super Record... Info and advice?

I just landed a Gios Super Record at the Seattle bike swap! It's not in the best shape, but it has some cool parts for sure. I was wondering if someone could help with the year. Also, what do you think the decal said after "super record" on the top tube?

The only numbers on the frame I can find are "58" on the bottom bracket shell. Parts are mostly Campy NR/Record and in good condition. Old logo Cinelli stem makes me think it's early 70's. "GT" pantograph Campy seatpost.

Now to decide what to do with it. The intention is to flip it in some way or another, unless I fall in love with it (it's my size!). It has some rust, and the paint/decals are in rough shape. Any guesses what a rust removal, repaint, and re-decal could cost? I'd love to keep it complete, but parting it out may be the most viable option if that's too expensive.

Thanks in advance!

I'm guessing more late 70's, given the flat QR levers on the brakes. Maybe circa '78. I'd be interested to know the patent date on the rear deraileur.

Interesting seat post, double bolt (Record) with fluets(SR). Custom for Gios? It is a nice bike, a little worse condition than my Colnago when I bought it because of the rust on the TT. If the price was right, it fits and rides well, I would keep it. Got side tracked.

Restoration would not bring a positive return. PC ($200? + $50 in decals?) might get you to break even depending on the price you paid.

Looks just like mine. I think mid/late 70's as well. I don't see to many with the G cutout on the BB. That seat post is cool. My large chainring is pantograph. Guess I'll keep an eye out for those G type seatposts.
I think after around 80, it went to recessed brake bolts

The rear derailleur's patent date is 74.

Is there a reliable way to decode serial numbers on these frames? forgot to mention theres the remains of a Columbus tubing sticker, cant read what type.

The rear dropouts appear to have the porta catena hole that indicates '77 at the very latest, and more likely '78. The seatpost appears to me to be a Record model with milled flutes and thus an aftermarket deal, rather than a rare two-bolt first-generation Super Record model.

According to Velobase, the seatpost is a 2 bolt fluted Super Record

That's not the same post as the one on this bike. Note that on the velobase first-gen. SR post, the flutes go all the way around and are the same length. The ones on the OP's bike don't go all the way around, and are different lengths (to work them around the Campagnolo logo). It's a milled Record post.

I would certainly consider repainting that if your going to keep it, and maybe even if your going to sell it in a year or two. I don't know what you paid/traded for it but a cheap pro paint (single color) colr could be had for 200 to 300 and I am sure for an early Gios you could break even atleast.

I believe it says Super Record / Gios one both sides of the TT

I tried to repaint mine one year. It was close to 1k from Cycle Art as well as Dr. Deltron. Del had the original paint from the Gios factory in Italy. I think that's the closest you can get. But where is the Dr. now???
If I do decide to repaint mine, I'd get a second h2o boss on it. 1 is a pain in socal.

Dr. Deltron had a huge hissy fit and left.

The painting on Gios frames was done with what is now an illegal paint containing cobalt.

+1. SR first-gen post has different flutes than the Gios post. 3rd-party modification.

Re: the paint: I did some research on my Colnago Mexico (it's blue, too), and found some reference to Joe Bell mentioning the Gios and Colnago color can be duplicated (or close) by using House of Kolor SG-110 Marine Blue.

The difference between the Colnago and the Gios is the Gios uses it over a red basecoat and the Colnago uses it over a white base.

Yeah, I know it's not the full story, I just remember him getting angry for not getting tipped? Idunno.

Anyway, beautiful bike. My neighbor has a Gios and I've yet to talk to him about it. Maybe he doesn't know what it is. I just know it's my size...

I can confirm that fact cause some of the red is under some of the scratches on my Gios.

That being the case, the weight of the details seems to be tipping the scale toward 1978 being the year of the bike.

Keep the Gios, no longer available for the US market and will only increase in value. Gios has split up to two company's, one in Japan and the other in Italy run by the son's. The website for the Italian made Gios is "https://www.giostorino.it/titanio.aspx" without the quotation marks. They don't export to the USA, but that could change. You can get a good auto-body shop to do the paint for a lot less and the decals(reproduction) get be obtain on Ebay. The condition of the paint and corrosion warrants a restoration and worth it.

A bit crusty, but should be fun. the Panto seat post asks for a Panto chainring, of the Campagnolo type. I agree 1978-79. As most of these were imported as frame sets, components are useless in placing an age in my view.

Gios is like many other Italian builders, frame numbers are for the tax man, and no one in Italy likes him.

I hate to be that guy again but just make sure your top tube is not bent near the headtube.Replacement front wheels always warrant extra attention. The frame would still be worth a repair but you might want to know. I sure hope it is just an optical illusion, its a nice bike. See the attached picture, I have added some lines.
