THANKS Velognome! That '36 Bates track racer may be the closest I'll get to ever seeing what my Dad was riding in England during WWII. All his photography was stolen on the troopship on the way back to Canada in August, 1945. So as a boy, I never got to see what he so glowingly described as his beloved ride in those days.
His bike was a pre-war track racer that had brakes fitted to it. And he said that there were two sets of wheels that came with it — one set had rims there were made of bamboo. Dad said that he could bounce the machine on his index finger. Well ... he was always given to a little hyperbole, but when you see these beauties — stunning machines — I more given over to taking his words literally — words said so many, many years ago now.

Ack. I looked at those pictures, and now I want one of
those Jack Taylor SW's, which are probably rarer than hen's teeth, and it's all your fault. Let that weigh on your conscience a while!
(Hmm, picture's not loading, but maybe this link will help.... https://www.flickr.com/photos/meauxtown/31394360)

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Ron Cooper is now building Bates Cantiflex frames with Diadrant forks and has been for a little while... he may have had something to do with the Gillot shown in that spread as this is where he started his apprenticeship.
Bates has never stopped making bicycles.
Some of those designs are downright frightening.

I assume alot of these more unique designs date back to days where there no was sponsorsip or manufacturer names to be displayed??

Some, but most were in existence before that rule was put into place. It's a common misperception that the designs were developed in response to the rule - the desire to stand out from a very crowded field of UK makers probably had much more to do with it. And many of the most well-known unique design elements (i.e. the Hetchins "curly" stays) predated the rule. But the rule was certainly an incentive to continue making distinctive bikes.

Gridplan - Obviously we'll need a ride report and a photo spread when you get your old Paris Galibier assembled.
You may want to take out an extra insurance policy before the 1st test ride though!

There was a thread on retrobike about the touring Jack Taylor, apparently the bike is a 1979 example of a 1953 design. The thread derails to the subject of Clelands (which in and of themselves are very interesting British designs), however the first and last posts tie in to the Jack Taylor.
