brake pad wheel guides. the point?
 
I have not seen them mentioned. I guess I think they look cool, but why were these considered a necessity? Is it for faster wheel changes in races?

Zeus pads?

The guides aren't strictly necessary but were intended to allow faster wheel changes by guiding the tire between the pads.
