Early Seventies Maserati...

Does anyone know anything about the Maserati road bicycle, particularly one from the early seventies?

The bike, my size for a change, features Faulk tubing, Campagnolo drops, Stronglight 49d crank set, Campy Gran Sport transmission, Universal brakes, Campy Gran Sport high flange hubs.

The question is, were these decent bicycles? Sheldon brown seems to think the ones with Columbus or Reynolds were to notch, or close to it, as I recall.

Anybody from Boston will remember "the Maserati guy", who left a bad taste in my mouth re. Maserati bikes.

However, yours looks to be a pretty nice mid level bike, but I don't have any insight to add. Other than that I bet it would be comical if you tried to sell it on the Boston CL...

It's built with quality, name-brand tubing, Campy drops, and all high-quality parts... I'd ride it!

(Falck tubing, right?)

Yes, the tube set is Falck (excuse my previous spelling error). I would also ride the bicycle, but I am not positive, yet, that I will buy it.

Nope, change that last remark to I just authorized my friend to make the purchase. After all, the 49d crank set, the TTT Grand Prix steering stem, and the Ideal Rebour(spelling again), alone, are worth the paying price.

So, it looks like another chrome plated lug, Italian bicycle will get a look at the inside of The Old Shed. That makes seven Italian bikes. Unusual, or is it, for a guy who collects high end Canadian offerings;-)

Interesting components. The Rebour finished Ideale saddle is certainly a worthwhile find and the 3TTT Gran Prix stems have become pretty rare and pricey these days, too. The freewheel looks like it could be a Regina "Oro" - which would make sense on an Italian bike (and, yes, Regina did make cogs as large as 31 teeth), but I'm thinking it is a SunTour (Maeda) freewheel with a gold toned finish and that is not bad either... assuming it is not too gunked up. Some people look down on the Nuovo Tipo hubs simply because they were a lower tier product, but I've never had any problems with them and actually prefer the round drillings just because they are reminiscent of even older hubs. I see that the Stronglight 49d crankset has the hex-head chainring connecting bolts. Those chainrings were (finally) replaced with the larger bores for standard 10 mm. diameter hollow hex-key bolts in 1974.

Looks like you got a very nice buy even if you decide to retire the frameset!

Maserati came on the bicycle scene circa 1974. While I've never seen one in person, an entry level model rec'd a favourable road test in Bicycling. A high end model was also road tested by Road & Track.

The top tubes should a decal, format MT-x, indicating the model. I suspect yours is about an MT-4 or MT-5, with a higher model indicated by a smaller number. FYI, MT = Maserati Tipo.

That's a far sight nicer than the one I picked up at a local swap last year. Not that the one I got was bad for a 70's entry level machine, but not quite a keeper.

Re: The Maserati Guy

Haha its not that bad.

There was a guy who supposedly had a NOS Maserati he wanted $1,000 for but it was a bottom end offering with stem shifters, turkey levers etc IIRC and it wasn't NOS. That in itself is pretty common but he would repost multiple times a day, never lowering his price and that spurred dozens of Re: ads. This went on for a few months and "The Maserati Guy" became a bit of an ongoing joke. I had sort of forgotten about it though until I saw your thread.

That's a very cool bicycle and one that deserves to stay original, but if that's not in the cards those Rebour saddles bring a pretty penny.

Oh, I have no intention of retiring the frame set. If I like the bike, it will be mine. If I don't, I will offer it, or the frame itself, and components separately, to someone(s) who does want it.

I do think the Maserati to be a pretty nice bicycle, and I have always dreamed about buying a real Maserati. My dreams, however, did have four wheels included in each scenario.

Oh yeah; the TC by Maserati is quite an interesting phenomenon in the turbo dodge community.

Very highly respected as whole cars, though the complete unavailability of bodywork spares is a downer. They're sought-after as wrecks, too -- the manual transmission versions have a unique cylinder head with much greater performance potential than the other available options. There were only 501 of the manual-transmission cars shipped.

Saw one driving around recently by an old lady. Took me a few seconds to figure out what it was. Looks very "Ford", but twisted.

Did Maserati actually make the bikes or just license the name? I've heard they're desirable, but have never seen one that seems at all special.

I did see this bike, but on Craigslist, just a day or two ago. I don't remember what he was asking for it on CL but a grand seems a bit much to me. I paid about 1/5 of that but feel pretty happy with the price, none the less.

If the bike I bought is what I think it to be, my guess is that I will really like it and decide to hang on to it. However, the bicycle just might be a tad small.

The Maserati has already been delivered to my friend's house and he will be sending it to me when he gets a chance. Until then, I will just have to settle for what is on hand at the moment.

I remember it but with no personal experience. A co-worked had a bi-turbo however, a spiffy car from the early 80's IIRC. One day he called me at the office from his cell phone, could I come rescue him, his car having nearly caught fire. He had taken it for service to the local Maserati/Alfa-Romeo dealer (by coincidence a facility just around the corner from my house and now the site of Aston-Martin/Lotus Of New England) and a dweeb had re-installed an under-dash plastic panel by driving a screw through the wiring harness. When he hit the right switch it, ah, melted some insulation. It wasn't the car's fault.

Randy, The model you have is an MT-7. It's sort of in the middle of the lineup. The next model down in the line, the MT-8, had a longer wheelbase and a cottered-steel crank, and was the lowest-priced one with sewups. The MT-6 had a higher angle frame without chrome lugs and the three main tubes were Columbus. It sported a Nervar Star crank and Campy Gran Sport tranny. Back in '77 or '78 I bought five Maseratis from a dealer that was going out of business: an MT-3, MT-6, MT-7, MT-8 and an MT-10. I have the original brochures for most of the models somewhere. My MT-7 came with the Campy pressed steel tranny (the name of which I've forgotten) and I replaced it with a Huret Jubilee decades ago. I think the MT-8 and above are good bikes. I rode the MT-8 to work for years and did two RAGBRAIs on the MT-7. BTW, that freewheel is most likely a Regina (mine is). Your bike is probably newer than mine. I'm figuring they upgraded the MT-7 to the Campy Gransport, but this is just a guess.

Randy, The model you have is an MT-7.
I have the original brochures for most of the models somewhere.
I have been trying to get closer to the exact model - thanks. Also, if you are at all interested in sharing the brochures, real thing or electronic files, I would be interested. Particularly for the MT-7 model.

Still haven't got mine yet. It is really difficult for my friend to get big things moved around but he will get er done. He always does. Meanwhile, I get to practice my anxiety - I can't wait.
