a stranger recognized me
A young couple with two year old twins looked at the house for sale next door to me last weekend. I said hello to them as I arrived back home from walking the greyhounds. The husband said to me, "You're Tom Reingold!"
He recognized me from bikeforums. They're looking to move here from New York City.

Mostly Mischief
Too funny. I guess the 'stache and friendly smile is sticking in peoples memory.
I think you're the only one with the actual face on the avatar.

That may be true for now. khatfull had his punim on his avatar for a while, and I thought it was the face of a model, but it's really his face. Too bad he took that picture down.
Yeah, the mustache gets a lot of responses. Yesterday in the train station in NYC, a police officer said, "Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude, but that's an awesome mustache. We're having a mustache growing contest, so could we take your picture?" Of course I laughed and said yes.

You gonna eat that?
I've had strangers recognize me by my bicycles and call out "Hey, Doohickie!" It's amazing really how many people around town know me from forums and blogs. Based on this thread I was thinking of changing my avatar to my picture, but decided instead to just update my profile picture.

I got outed this afternoon while setting up bikes at the the Classic Bike Show - part of the Seattle Bike Expo. But not from BF. Apparently this gent recognized the drillium on my Molteni Super from the Internet!
BTW, there's a lot of beautiful steel at this year's show. Pics on Sunday!
Tom, that is QUITE the 'stache!

That is really funny. It's a cliche, but it's a small world after all (and the internet is making it smaller)

Wow, that's nice to be recognized from so far away.
I'm also prolific on our community forum, maplewoodonline.com. People I don't know say hello to me all the time. It's both amusing and embarrassing.
A few years ago, I sat next to a couple at the mayor's ball. They told me they come home and say to each other, "What did Tom Reingold say today?" but in a very un-complimentary tone. Apparently my politics are the opposite of theirs.

I guess I need a clearer picture. Knowing anything of real value about bikes might also help....
Jan might notice that I'm sporting an ancient Trey Anastasio T-Shirt from about 1995 in the photo.

That is me in my avatar. I have been recognized by other rowers as a fellow BF post-er. As a sub group within a sub group, we tend to stick out to each other....

There are several of us sporting avatars with our faces. The chances of another bikeforums visitor being in Rural Retreat, VA are slim though.

I was at the Twin Cities Bike Swap last month and gomango walked up and asked "Aren't you Frogbutter?".
I knew there would be other members there but my head was in the clouds.

I had a small "being recognized" incident last week. Answered a CL ad in St. Louis for a Fuji Touring Series V (which is not in my possession). Sent my e-mail and got back:
Keith,
I believe you are khatfull from bikeforums.net, correct? I'm kknh3. I haven't been on a lot lately, but have been semi-active there on and off. The Fuji is still available. As I know you're quite well versed in Fujis, let me know what information and/or pics you would like to see. I'll try to get that information to you.
Thanks,
Haha...why wasn't I surprised. Additonally kknh3 did a super job of packing the bike and getting it to me.

Crazy stories! I'm not looking exactly like my avatar right now since my wife prefers the beard to the 'tache, but that's basically me.
I did have a non-cycling recognition moment about 10 years ago. I was back in Oxford, England to watch Radiohead play. A couple of friends and I were walking down the high street there and I was wearing a T-shirt of the Missionary Organisation I grew up in, except it was for the Brazilian branch and in Portuguese. Someone tapped me on the shoulder, having recognised the logo and asked me if I worked with the organisation in Brazil. I said no, not exactly, but I grew up in it here in England. To which the girl replied, and this still blows my mind: "Wait, you're not Matt Bonjour are you?" WTH! Turns out her best friend and I had done some missions trips together when we were younger and my name had stuck. mental.

I always thought, while seeing your picture here, that you looked like a guy I used to work with when I was going through my apprenticeship in Madison WI -Spider Deihl. I thought nobody else in the USA had a mustache like that. You even have the same glasses. You wouldn't happen to always wear a really small pair of narrow pointy snake-skin cowboy boots too? That would be way too much of a coincidence!

I found myself chatting about the weather with a complete stranger on the street a couple of years ago. As we parted he said,"see ya round, Ben".
I still have no clue who he was.

I've had that happen several times. Makes me feel like a bit of a jerk, usually. I typically remember faces, but names? Uh uh.

Until I shaved my beard off a couple of years ago, for 30 years I was the ubiquitous bald guy with a beard. I regularly had people telling me that they had relatives or friends who were my identical twin. Once in a while they'd show me a photo, and I always thought the person and I looked nothing alike!

My wife and I have been recognized many times in odd places, for example x-c trails in Vermont or New Hampshire. But never because of BF or bikes. We are musicians, you see...
One time another BF member wrote about noticing my bike. No notice of me however. The bike must have been out riding by itself, I guess.
