Chrome in a can update

Well if anyone remembers I painted some fork ends a month or 2 back with the Duplicolor Insta Chrome Finish Paint.

Here is the update. The fork has been sitting the whole time while I decided what to do with the paint on the rest of the bike. I had so much surface rust spot areas that I decided to repaint the frame. So I picked up the fork to prepare the top end of it. When handling the Chrome ends the paint is rubbing off on my hands even if I use a towel. You can see the finger marks after handling. So I determined that it was not going to hold up and stripped it off with the rest of the fork paint. Now the fork ends will be painted like the rest of the fork.

It was still a good experiment for the C & V cause!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks for doing the dirty work for the rest of us.

I used that stuff once on my Jeep head light protectors. I primed and painted very carefully several coats allowing a day between coats. Convinced it was going to hold up, I attached them to my Jeep. W/in several days they began to turn grey, finally turning totally grey in a week.

Nothing ventured...

I had the same experience a decade or two ago. I was hoping that things had changed or I had just done something wrong. Seems everyone has the same experience with the stuff. It makes one wonder how they can still sell the stuff.

I put some clear coat on top of it. Even went to the auto parts store and made sure I had the right kind. Put up a test spot and it took the shine out of it. So no can do.

I saw some tv show where they used a special multi-part paint on an audi r8 to make it look like it was chromed. Looked expensive and needed a bunch of special equipment.

All paints with metallics have to be clearcoated. The final steps would be to wet sand and buff to a high polish. Unprotected metallic paints do not last. Having said that..."chrome in a can" is junk.

Well, nothing's changed, then, since I used to buy that paint to do the wheels on my model cars. Always turned grey.

Pretty sure those are the dudes I saw on TV. I think it was the program called "West Coast Customs". Car looked like hell all ping'd out in Chrome but its a cool technique.

Kommisar89's link to xtremechrome shows one of my favo(u)rite wheels - '56 Cadillac aluminium. (with a stainless hub cap.)

(Next favo(u)rite is of course '53/'54/'55/'56 Cadillac wires.)

Regards,
J T

Sounds like Alsa Corp's Mirrachrome. They chromed 50 Cent's Lambo https://www.alsacorp.com/company/50cent/50cent.htm

I used it on a guitar years ago. It turned out sweet, on the parts that were painted properly (not much of it at all). I should have bought the paint and gave it to a body shop to spray.
