TearDrops & Kayaks etc.....

I am researching building a toy hauler/ teardrop trailer and stumbled on a Tiny Trailer forum. The interesting thing was they had Bicycle forum within their topics. I also noticed quite a few of the building threads also overlaped information regarding skin over wood frame kayak/canoe building ( another project started and will get finshed when I clear the extra bikes out of the garage). Which got me to wandering how many other C/Vers are into such other projects?
Is it in our nature?
Do these same people have similar tastes or is it all of us on other forums?
If I went to the forums with video game stuff would any of you be there ( not going to just wondering)?

I'm too busy playing video games to go on any videogaming forums

...and working on my Canoe

....and the bikes

I've always wanted a trailer so I could tow my canoe with my bike.
Actually I've had this idea of a bi-mode tour in my head for a few years now where I'd tow a canoe while biking and put the bike in the canoe when I get to a lake or river.

That reminds me of this thread in the MTBR "passion" subforum, but they used inflatable kayaks. Looks like an fun trip.

have you guys seen the Autocanoe? It's a pedal powered anphibian;
https://www.autocanoe.com/
What kind of canoe do you have, Zaph?
I've got a basket case Old Town from 1927 at the moment, I had a couple of those skin on frame kayaks. They're neat. The canvas was shot on one of them so I shrink wrapped it. It was pretty but you had to be careful not to poke it with the paddle.

Its nice to see another old canoe in as rough of condition as mine

Mine's a 1970's Stowe Canoe Company 13' pack canoe. Its great for soloing but does equally well with 2 folks and loaded with camping gear. Last Time I had it out we loaded it up with probably 200 pounds of camping gear and then cracked the Rotting gunwales when we lifted it up to carry it to the water

.....needless to say mine is in bad need of having the gunwales replaced. Maybe I'll get to that this summer
Nice to see a Kayak in a pool That's how I learned to eskimo roll. I used to be good enough that I could hand roll (no paddle), but I don't do whitewater anymore.

I started rebuiling this '52 Lightning. Alas, too big to tow with a bike and truly a money pit. It now lives in Upstate New York. I now have canoe plans in my desk......some day....

As a kid, I built a number of canvas/wood frame kayaks and canoes. There are some remarkably simple, albeit somewhat boxy, designs that work quite well.

It must run in the blood...

I have built two stripper canoes in the past and sold both, I still have the bits and a bunch of lumber to build a couple more. I have a frame welded up for a tear drop but haven't gotten much further. I own two vintage Airstreams that are undergoing a 120 step rehab I also own plans to build a variety of small sailboats and shanty boats. And have several vintage tractors...

Oh, yes we cannot forget the vintage Tractors, although I let my old Wheel Horse go two years ago. I thought it would stay in the family, but after my Uncle passed, my Aunt sold his Wheel Horse collection as scrap.

IMHO that would be grounds for excommunication from the family

Most of my stuff is Farmall with a odd Massey Ferguson or John Deere thrown in. We actually still use most of them for....farming.

THis probably has nothing to do with this thread, but I own both a canoe and a kayak and Ive thought about towing one of them with a bike. I live within a mile of three different rivers and it's actually possibly to boat down a river and up a canal back to the same spot. so I thought about biking one of the boats to that spot.

I just threw out a bunch of steel crappy wheels. Maybe I should have kept a few and built some sort of boat trailer out of them.

Hey, I got me one a them! Soviet military clone of a Klepper, breaks down into two bags, assembles in about 20 minutes (I could probably get it done faster if I had some old Russian sergeant bellowing at me). Skin-on-frame is enormously strong and very light, and it's probably the cheapest fastest way to get a boat you built yourself out on the water. Doesn't have to be just kayaks, either. Emerald Marine on Puget sound built a 26' "umiak" interpretation out of doug-fir and Dacron a few years ago, and it is holding up great. Within certain limits, any small boat can be built SOF and usually will have improved performance due to the decreased weight. Obviously attention still has to be paid to ballast ratio (for sailboats) and obviously it wouldn't work for a big powerboat with a husky engine; but for the average weekend tinkerer, it's an easy way to build something nice without breaking the bank.

I read through some of these threads: https://www.mikenchell.com/forums/vie...34eb128d3c0ed1
They are using foam overlayed with canvas and sealed. I wonder if it would be any quicker than the six year spare time ( nice teardrop Jeepr!) plan

Well, going back to boatbuilding technologies, I can see one of these 'Teardrop' trailers being pretty easy to assemble using plywood. No compound curves, everything is either a straight line or a simple bend. If you're handy with tools, just constructing the body shouldn't really take all so long. Chassis and wheels might take a bit of doing, though Northern Tools has trailer kits that I imagine would simplify things considerable.

You can find me on the TinyTrailer forum too, with the same username as here.

Mu trailer is here.
https://www.mikenchell.com/forums/vie...r=asc&start=45

And I yearn to build a kayak too.
I did build a sailing skiff (also tiny), but it sailed.

I haven't been on those forums since I sold the last car that could function as a tow vehicle. I still want to build one someday, maybe I could build an ultra-lightweight one to tow with my vw new beetle. I think my favorite is Rob's cabin car (I think it's called that anyway... it's been awhile). Captain Blight, there's a plan on that site called "The Weekender" which is intended to be a quick-build but it's boxy and doesn't have the traditional shape. Still if you wanted something fast, there it is.

*edit* I've also done some reading about 1-sheet boats and puddle duck racers. Guess I just like working with my hands.
