Dancelli Build

I've been remiss- should have posted these pics of the finished build on the awesome Dancelli frame I purchased from BBM around Christmas. Nice ride- love the Max tubing! Every time I wipe down the frame I find another little detail that makes me smile.

That's Ultegra 9 speed with an Ultegra/Mavic Open Pro wheelset. Kind of an odd color combo on the Pro3's- Digital Blue and Tabac- but I think it works.

that is Beautiful!! I love that frame. that paint is great it really highlights the lines of the tubing. I really have to try one of those lugged frames.

What is that stem?

Very Nice, Doc. Gotta love a pink bike.

Nice work, as per usual.

It's FUCHSIA, dammit!

Fuchsia Schmuchsia.. it looks pink when your looking through rose colored glasses

I saw that frame before at BBM's. It is a nice one. He could handle the fuschia color as I remember, but I think in the end it was the stars that set him adrift from it.

Nice build. The tires are a good match for that frame!

Nice build! I agree with OFG re the tires. Btw, what are the white thingamabobs below the brake levers?

I'm betting lights.

+ 1 to the tires working with the paint...I'm not sure how but they do.

Great looking build. I didn't love the paint at first but I've warmed up to it and I'm sure it rides like a dream.

WNG 05-12-11 01:34 PM

I think they're Knog(sp?) LED lights.

The frame was a hit when BBM had it, and it's another home run build this time around. Nice work Doc.

I've seen those tires and thought they'd never look good on any bike...until I saw this thread. Beautiful work, excellent component choice, and nice build!

rccardr 05-12-11 07:32 PM

Thanks for the kind words. The tires were a risk, but I really do like the way they pop on the bike.

The stem is...an Origin8 with the logos polished off. I think they make a really nice product- classic lines and a very good finish. I used a bunch of them for frame-up builds and finally decided to put one on a high end bike. Works just fine, comes in several lengths, and about $16 each brandy new. While we're at it, the seat post is a Kalloy and I feel pretty much the same way about their products.

The thingamawhosits on the handlebars are indeed new Knog lights. These have an extra blinky mode and use two 2032 coin batteries, so they are super bright and with one on each side they blink out of phase with each other. Not great for light to ride by, but great to alert oncoming bikes and cars.

I have only one problemo: can't shift onto the small ring up front because the FD can't come in that close to the seat tube, even with the tension screw backed all of the way out. The way the 5500/6500 BB's are made there's no way to put a spacer ring behind the drive side cup to bring it further out. Bottom line is,, to use the inside ring I need to move the crank a couple of mm outboard.

Not an issue for me immediately because with the wide spread of the rear cassette I never get out of the big ring on local rides, but eventually I'm going to want to take this into steeper hill country and the small ring will be needed. With the 109.5 6500 double BB the chainline is 45mm to the center of the big ring. I'm happy to buy a 6500 triple BB that's 118 wide, but would like to know if anyone has one lying around that they could measure for me so I can figure out if the extra 9mm is all on the crank side, or wider to some extent on both sides. I doubt it's symmetrical, although even that would probably work out. My other option is to go back to a square taper BB- like a 115- and a 9 speed compact crank from Truvativ or FSA. That's worked on a couple of other bikes (the SuperTempo and an orange Corsa Extra Merckx I'm almost done with) but I hate to give up that lovely Ultegra crank. Plus it matches the rest of the group.

Ideas?

I had the same issue, except I was using a triple crank. The problem is that the seat tube is oversize, so you can't use the same BB as you would normally with whatever crank you choose. I solved the issue with a spacer behind the drive side cup to move the spindle out about 2mm. If you can't put a spacer in, you'll need a BB with a slightly longer spindle.

Yeah, that's it in a nutshell. Unfortunately, those V1 octalink BB's were only made in 109.5 and 118, nothing in between.

Anybody have a triple octalink BB they can measure for me? Specifically, the stub protrusion on the drive and non-drive sides? If all extra 9mm is on the crank side (doubtful, but possible) I may run into the opposite problem- FD unable to reach the outside of the big ring.

ozneddy 05-13-11 03:20 PM

Those tyres look cool !

WNG 05-13-11 09:31 PM

V2 Octalink splines used by mtb BB are too deep, the crank won't seat properly.

mapleleafs-13 05-13-11 09:49 PM

i do like the tires alot, they match the overall look of the bike.

i've used kalloy seat posts on flips before, good product but a little on the heavy side, wouldn't use one on my personal rides, but then again i'm one of those idiots that are shelling out 100+ bucks for an aero campy of shimano seat post, haha

nice bike!!!!

Oh don't feel bad, not missing much. I drank the Octalink Koolaid and bought into the road stuff before it was too late. :)

Turns out the triple V1 BB is wider on both sides and the stub shaft difference is about 4mm on the drive side. I'm going to slide one in there and see if it resolves the inside ring problem (it should) without causing chainline problems with the big ring (it might, but I also have a braze on triple Integra FD that probably has more outboard swing).

If that doesn't work, two things will happen:
1) I'll put a 115mm square taper BB in there with a compact 9 speed crank from Truvativ or FSA
2) I'll be selling a hella bunch of V1 octalink BB's (double english, double italian and triple italian) and a very nice Ultegra crankset.

re: the Kalloy seatpost. Yes, they are marginally heavier than a 'big name' post, but they are also something like 350mm long. So I cut off 3-4 inches on the bottom, still have plenty in the seat tube, and they are lighter than out of the box. If I weighed less than 195 or so, component weight would be more of an issue for me. As it is...

rccardr 07-03-11 05:57 AM

Update: It's been an interesting project to get the Dancelli to shift properly. Because the bottom of the seat tube is fairly wide and the FD hanger is also a little long outboard, I had a hard time getting the FD to shift down to the inner chain ring. I bought and tried two more different cranksets, three bottom brackets and two sets of BB spacers (one from Austria, of all places), all to no avail. I mean, they worked, kinda, but either the chain line was too far in or too far out, or the chain would rub on the FD cage in one of the gear combos. Too fussy.

Then I started playing around with FD's, figuring that maybe what I needed was one with a slightly wider or less deep cage. FOUR FD's later, I came up with one that works- a Shimano 2nd gen 1056- and I was able to keep the 109.5 BB and Ultegra crankset I started out with. Even so, had to replace one of the limiter screws with a longer one to keep it from swinging too far out (!) and overshifting the big ring.

The good news: THIS BIKE IS FAST!!! Rode it yesterday on my 20 mile training loop- the one which I know every stone, every crack, and all the tricks to make good time- and set a new personal average speed record. In the heat and after working out in the yard most of the afternoon, so without fresh legs. This baby is definitely back in the rotation.

Whatever happens on the gearing thing-----That bike is fusion, man. Great job.
