school me on 80s cinellis

I'm checking out an '83? cinelli super corsa? and I know very little about them. It's ferrari red w/ the more modern "flying c" type font/decals. It looks sort of like this :

Except, no chrome lugs or stays, frame is all red. Columbus tubing sticker, but the "type" part is missing/torn. Front fork is fully chromed, with cinelli logo on the fork crown shoulders. There is a "cycle art" decal on the left chainstay. So, a possible repaint, w/ replacement front fork? Or could it be all original? I will try to get pics later this week.

Whether it's deserved or not, a lot of collectors aren't really interested in Cinellis past the 1977 date of Cino's sale to Columbus.

Supposedly the quality fell off afterwards, and Cino's production head/chief framebuilder did leave in 1980. (At least that's what I think I learned from the CR weekend)

In any case, plug this into your value calculation. It's not worth [market value] what a '77 would be.

Yes I knew these weren't valued or prized as much as the older cinellis, but I wasn't sure exactly why. I made an offer on it ($400) which I believe is at or below market value - assuming it's in original condition.

I've owned a '63, a '65, a '69, a '75, and an '84.

The '84 is the only one I still have.

No chrome and the Cyclart graphic indicates a budget repaint by them, better ones get more info most often, a single color transfer would go with a basic paint, two tone with a more expensive job. No chrome indicates that the chrome was shot before the repaint or the guy did not like chrome and or did not want to pay for it being masked. If $400 for the frame and fork, too much. If $400 for the bike and it appears straight probably a deal.
Good chance the bike may have been modified at the repaint, added bottle bosses etc, before "vintage" kicked in vogue making changes was common.

Frame is probably straight, Cyclart really pushed to have them correct alignment and chase / face things while at their shop, for a price of course.

Forgot all about the CR weekend. With the archives are no longer public, how quickly one forgets. Was it a good event? Geography will permanently keep me away.

Whole bike. Except for the wheels (shimano 600 hubs), the rest is campy record or super record, modolo professional? levers and calipers, and cinelli bars and stem. white turbo saddle.
repechage, there is a seperate CR weekend thread with pics. Also, the CR list archives are still searchable, though you may have to be a list member, not sure.

Yeah; they're worth more to others than they were to me, though I sold them fairly, not top dollar. Honestly, the '84 rides the best and its every bit as well (or poorly) made!

Oh, an '83 may be the last in the traditional Cinelli design (without the flying C in the fork crown and buttons on the seatstay) so you could repaint with the oldstyle graphics if you chose.

Here's an '84 earlier than mine, new on ebay:

Missed that thread. The old archives stopped in early April. The new version appears to be members only. The framebuilders new version is visible to the riff raff.

Sounds like a reasonable value at $400. don't bother thinking about renewing the chrome, find another frame if you want the bright work.

Interesting about the quality drop-off and this being a topic of the CR weekend. Wonder who provided that info.
Some of those 80's ones that still have the distinctive seatlug design and the three holes have a reputation for being very nice riders. I amost took a pop at one on ebay a couple of years ago.

I have an '83 and the quality is very good, however, it built up into a relatively heavy bike compared to most anything else I own (and that's not owing to small or large amounts of drillium on those other bikes, either). It was disappointing in that way, but everything else about it was spot-on.

I agree with the chrome statements above; these would've had the fork crown, both headlugs, half seatlug, seatstay caps, dropout faces and the driveside chainstay chromed. 1983 would also have been the last year of the three-hole drillings in the lugs and the "Flying C" logo on the fork crown didn't appear until the following year.

Ask about the serial number. First two numbers should be the year of manufacture. Other specifics (at least for mine, which was untouched until I had it repainted) are:

Star-shaped bottle boss decoration (one set)
Braze-on front derailleur hanger
Campy top of BB shell cable guides
"Flying C" panto in brake bridge
Oval cutouts in side of seatlug
Chain hanger peg
Three toptube braze-on brake cable guides (these are very thin - about half the thickness of most others)

I hope this info helps to date the one you're considering.

DD

I think the SC is one of the longest-running models still being produced. NAHBS had one on display.

I don't know much about them, have seen them in pristine shape and those would command more than your offer, JP.
I've seen a few in really poor condition, but mostly in the "sweat" areas, and this told me they were ridden a lot and hard.

If I saw one I liked, I'd pay $400 in a heartbeat.

Quality drop-off wasn't a CR weekend topic, but Cino's '77 sale and the lead builder leaving c.'80 were. Pricing is lower afterward that date, deserved or not.

Good point. Perhaps a reason why the '85 model for Centurion seems to be appreciating a bit.
