Origins of the Raleigh Heron?
 

Does anyone know why Raleigh chose the Heron as their emblem despite having the namesake, and often the figurine stamped on early parts, of Sir Walter Raleigh? It's a bit of history that the all powerful Google hasn't been able to pin down for me. So I figured why not ask here.
