Universal Model 77 V. Nuovo Record brakes: which is better?
I've got a pair of each, and am wondering which ones to put on my Raleigh Professional. Which is the better? I asked Mr Muzi at Yellow Jersey this question yesterday, and got an answer I really should have expected: "It doesn't matter, because the ones that were stock are the ones that belong on the bike." Well, pooh-pooh to you too, Mr Man. I didn't want to know which ones were better for resale value or restoration correctness: I want to know which ones will send me over the handlebars if I grab too big a handful.
Has anyone ridden a bike equipped with the Universals? How do they stack up to the Campys?

I agree with Muzi. as for the difference I doubt you would notice any. I have a set of 77 here somewhere and they seem like real nice brakes.

I disagree with Andy on this one; use the one that you think is prettier, that's my advice.

I would probably go with the Campagnolo, but just because I've always loved the quick release. I am not a big fan of Universal brakes, but I've never had any experience with the 77. I can't imagine either one is as good as a modern dual-pivot. Campagnolos certainly weren't. But then again, with Scott Mathauser brake pads I've gotten the rear wheel off the ground using Campagnolo brakes.

Either brake will slow/stop your bike, but the Campagnolo Record brakes are so much more nicely finished! Universal 77 were a cheap wanna-be, compared to Campagnolo. About the only vintage brake from the late '70s-early '80s period that compares in quality, is the Modolo Pro. Yes, Superb is nice, Dura-Ace is nice, Galli was OK, CLB nice, but Modolo Pro (especially the early ones) and Campagnolo Record brakes are more beautifully made. Besides, the Raleigh Pros were equipped with Campagnolo.

Okay! Thanks a lot. I've got both brands so will go with the Campys (NR build throughout, actually) and not worry about it. I just picked up a set of salmon Kool-Stops for my gold Mafac Comps, which are said to have the same dovetail. So if I don't like the way the Campys work, I have something else I know will work well.

That is an astonishingly expensive sentence!
But... Yeah. Every time I think I can just cheap it out, I think "The Pro deserves it." Ya know, some few very skilled hands spent the better part of a day putting this frame together. I like to think of them as good, decent men, hardworking chaps who enjoyed a pint at the end of the day before going home to their families and enjoying the fruits of a hard day's work. I feel like I don't want to disappoint them.
This bike gets the best I can give it. My frame painter has agreed to do a spectrograph color-match and touchup the paint after I roll the dent out of the top tube. Thankfully, it's not in the decal area.
Hopefully Reg and Charlie and our Billy, that daft ol' sod, would approve.
