Brooks bar tape and fork paint question

Two questions:

I am about to install Brooks Bar Tape on my Raleigh Clubman, but I would like to use the twine method/style to finish it near the stem as in the link below. Can this be done with leather and, if so, what is the best way to go about it?

Second question : Does anyone know if the whole fork is chrome under the paint of a PX8? I have been itching to remove the paint, but I wanted to get a second opinion before I go crazy with the paint thinner.

I personally wouldn't touch the paint on that fork. That's a pretty classy looking Peugeot as is; I don't think you'll be as happy with a plain chrome fork.

It works the same as with any other wrap. Check the Rivendell site for their little trick to tuck the end of the twine. That's how I do it.

I agree with 20grit leave the fork alone. it might be chrome but not a highly polished show chrome like the bottom, it will never shine as niceand takes alot of tlc

Besides, plain chrome forks are often perceived as 3rd-party replacement forks and suggest a history of front end damage on the frame if you ever decide to sell it.

Yes, the video on the Rivendell site shows the way to do it. I used this leather cord to wrap mine. The cord has now aged to match the Brooks honey tape perfectly. Use a little Proofide on the cord right after you wrap it. Google "2mm round leather lace natural" and you'll find the one i used.

The fork is decidedly not polished chrome underneath! (Take this as the voice of sadder - but wiser - experience.)

I understand, however this is one I will hang on to "till death do us part". Who else would put SLJ Simplex and Build new wheels for an old PX8? At this point it's worth way more than I will ever get out of it.

Yeah right, you had your dad do that for you!

Pretty nice for a first (or 100th) attempt.

It is about the 100th or more time have have done bar tape, but never leather and most certainly not twine. It only takes a few seconds of searching the interwebs to find about 1,000 "how to finish bar tape with twine" results. . and some videos as well.

The wrap looks great! Good attention to detail!
I have been thinking about repaint since I got my "Nago in 08. I cleaned it up and found the fork is fully chromed and have seen many others with nothing but full chrome forks. I question if they really were all chrome from the factory without paint. Pictures of my bike look good but you get close and the paint looks like it was exposed to a gravel spray. Given my current situation and others input, "its only original once", I have not even considered removing the paint on the fork. Here is how bad it looks:
