French Porn Friday: 1975 Motobecane Grand Jubile Reynolds 531
After I built up a 1979 Motobecane Mirage 1x5 city bike for his wife, a good friend of mine asked me to build him something to ride with her. I acquired this Grand Jubile and it's his size, so here we go.
Obviously, it's not finished. But, I'm getting close. The bike was well used and when I received it (expertly packed by fender1) it was, by far, the greasiest, grimiest bike I've worked on. Grease is great, though. There was virtually no rust on the bike.
I've cleaned, polished, and waxed the frameset and serviced the headset and bottom bracket. My friend asked if there were options for dark green saddle and bar tape. I told him I could make bar tape match just about any color and I knew my LBS had a dark green B-17 Special. I think it looks great on the silver/champagne colored frame.
A Motobecane branded stem, VO adjustable brake pads, Suntour Power Ratchets and a Shimano 600 FD are installed and it will soon get a Motobecane branded Sugino Super Maxy and a Sachs-Huret Jubilee RD.
It's going to be a pretty sweet ride on which to bomb around Chi-Town.

Beautiful...what else is in store for us on French Porn Friday?
There's nothing I like better when I go to look at a bike to buy than that multi-decade old layer of greasy garage dirt/grime. It makes a wonderful paint preservative!

That is going to be one sweet ride...but, I'd leave the Huret RD in a glass case and put something more practical (like a Shimano to match the FD, or a SunTour to match the shifters) on it. They look pretty but only shift so-so...and are guaranteed thief-bait.

I think that's all I've got, but I'm sure someone has some stuff to keep it going.
Exactly. Peace and grease, dude!
How many Shimano or Suntour RDs are made for Huret dropouts? Holler if you have an adapter to sell me!
Bike thieves are opportunists so I doubt a high end RD really ups the chances of theft. I'm told bike theft and vandalism is pretty bad in Chicago. I don't think he'll be leaving it locked up at all. It's possible we may go with a Huret Eco. I got a pretty good deal on the Jubilee, though, and from what I understand the Sachs-Huret version shifted somewhat better than the original. It's Chicago, though. He'll be shifting about once a month.

All the cool kids are doin' it!
Sadly, no. I've been doing too much riding and wrenching on other folks' bikes to build up the wheels for my chrome bike (that gets the tastiest French bits).
I have not forgotten you, dude! Anyone have advice for sending frozen meat? Is dry-ice the best way to go?

Yeah! Some bleu "blue".
Thanks! Good thinking, but I don't. I'll figure something out.

Seems to have been standard issue in '76. Got them on all three of my Gitane Whatever-the-model-is's. Bought the first way too small, but in a nice original condition.
then went on to find a frameset in my size to transplant the parts to. Found that too.
But before I could pick that up I found a complete bike in my size (the one above).
Now I got three.

A Shimano Crane should work and so should a first generation Campy Rally (which I suspect is a knockoff). They were designed to fit all types of hangers, even a tapped Simplex. I just put a Rally on my PX10.

You can also drill the dropout (radially), tap it with a bottoming tap and insert a set screw to act as a stop. The hard part is getting the set screw in exactly the right location, but it's no big deal if you use a derailer with a B screw.

Where've you been all day? This post was for you! Post some pics of that Moto before the bike dungeon eats it.
What will gearing be like? In other words, will you need long cage or will a short cage do?

On the Moto, the Crane is a long-cage (GS), but I haven't quite figured out the gearing. I'm likely to put a TA Pro vis 5 on the front with something like 46/30t rings. With that front end, I'd be fine with a short cage and a 26t max rear cog.

Gitane Interclub by djk762, on Flickr
1975ish Interclub Just getting fine-tuned for my wife. Will be her first 10 speed.
I have installed mks touring pedals with half-clips for her and added an acorn saddle bag. A few tools and a tire repair lesson and she is good to go.
