Just built up my Flying Scot

I've just rebuilt my 1964 Flying Scot Continental after changing to 700c wheels from the original 27" ones.

It had a frame respray a few years ago but has wee chips here and there, nothing drastic.

I built the wheels myself using Mavic Open Pro rims on Campag hubs, 36 db stainless spokes, now with 28 mm Michelin tyres. Chainset is Campag as is the rear mech (Chorus).

The down tube shifters are Campag friction ones I have had since I got them new in about 1978!

Bar and stem are Cinelli, double wrapped with red leather tape.

I swapped the original centre pull Weinmanns for Alhonga deep drop side pulls, which work well.

The seat post is an alloy one I had lying about but I have a Campag aero one somewhere. Just used a cheapo saddle to test ride as the Brooks I have planned for this is being worn in on a bike i use much more.

I fitted the original small bag support rack- which needs a bit of paint, and it looks great. I haven't seen another FS with one.

Bike rides lovely, takes a bit of getting used to dt levers again and having a six speed rear rather than the nine or ten speed rears on my other bikes- big gaps between gears. To think I always used to ride 10 speed bikes and toured with that sort of gearing!

Also it's high geared - 52/42 front where my Cinelli road bike has a 50/40/30.

i took the alloy guards off and fitted chromoplastic. Original Bluemels pump.

Anyway - hope you like it. I have kept all the stuff to change it back to normal.

I never even thought about the drive side- just the way I parked it.

The cable adjuster for the rear brake is built into the sidepull arm (like the front). I've just left the old centrepull adjusters on to protect the threads in the frame bridge.

Very pretty bike! I really like the color scheme. What size is that frame? It is hard to tell because the frame looks really compact. The fenders, chrome and red and white blend together so well! Colorful and stylish without being garish.

In my opinion, this bike is right up there with 65ers old Peugeot and that is saying a lot! One of the best looking bikes I have seen on here in a while! It might be my new favorite!

Thank you.

Its about a 22" frame, from memory. It's probably just an inch small for me but since I wanted a Flying Scot since seeing one when I was 14 (and riding a gas pipe special!) I adapt

They were hand built by Rattrays of Glasgow (Scotland) in 531 tubing.

I originally had Vittoria tyres on it with red sidewalls but it was too much.

When I get the Brooks on I'll fit my Cotton Duck saddlebag.

Cool bike! I look forward to more photos.

I guess that rear rack is really a bag support? That would be one big saddle bag, of course. The best kind, of course!

Very nice! I was on a ride today with a buddy who has an early 50s Flying Scot with an outrageous amount of fork rake. I assume you know about the Flying Scot website, which was recently restarted after a hiatus?

Very nice! Flying Scots are by and large very, very well-built, in terms of workmanship - tidy and stylish, but not "fancy."

Indeed, beautiful lugs etc. We Scots don't like to be too flashy

I have an all steel fleet (except for my hybrid ), but the Scot is a favourite - it rides nicely, very responsive, but not a "think and turn" like my Cinelli Supercorsa.

Is also very comfortable in that way steel is, even compared to my 531c Audax/fast tourer.

If I get time I'll recount the tale of when I first saw one and how I got this one.

Updated photos of drive side

I had the bike out while washing my others so thought I'd show a drive side shot and a badge details.

The bike has grease nipples on bb and headtube. (Not shown)

I never adjusted the date on the camera

What brand of Chromoplastic fenders are those? They look really good! I'll say it again. I really love that paint combo! There is another similar colored bike on the Show Us Your Vintage Rides thread that has black components. I do not like white as a primary color but it is the perfect accent color!
