First, you are being racist to assume it's stolen. Old men sell stuff all of the time, and I have bought my share of bikes for fractions of their "true" value - because lots of people see old bikes as old bikes. So this guy is a liar, because he doesn't speak English?
And as to ripping him off - this bike was transportation, nothing more. Now he has good transportation that he can reasonably depend on, rather than and old bike with nearly flat tires and rock hard brake pads - money for adjustment? Give me a break.
I certainly hope that you negative nellies Paid full value for everything and never used your unique hard won knowledge to your advantage, for obviously that is bad behavior.

The only opinion and stereotype I have of Mexicans, from WORKING with them, going to bars with them after work, and LIVING with them is what wonderful people they were and how much I respected their values and desire to improve their lives and that of their families. They remind me of my immigrant grand father...who barely spoke English. My thinking the bike is likely stolen has nothing to do with them being Mexican and everything to do with the particulars...that he had no idea what it was and traded it for a Magna because someone took advantage of him.
Sorry...but I'm calling BS. Everyone here knows bikes like Raleigh Internationals might not be valued, but the owners don't give them away either. When they are sold at estate sales, the seller and buyer usually at least know it's a nice bike. Is it possible everything is legit? Sure. I have an abandoned Merckx...crazy things happen.

WOW, cool story. I've run into a couple bums and DUI's riding nice bikes like Schwinns, Specializeds, and Cannondales. Not one of them would sell or trade and they all said they picked them up at thrift stores. My Shogun is from Grace Resource, $5 and I rolled it lovingly home. It didn't sell because the RD was broken.
I Quaudrouple the statment, need to see photos, proof of the "grail".

And to add to this, 1 newer carbon fiber Javelin, 1 Columbus Tenax Prelude, 1 Tange hybrid frame, 1 high end AL frame w/ Carve carbon rear triangle, and 3 other high end AL frames along with a box full of nice parts were dropped off at one of the local thrift stores/non-profits the other day (at once). Crazy crap happens.

There is a very dry Brooks professional underneath the rubber cover.
Some of you people are nuts.
I have seen plenty of "bought from a bum" stories, and never noticed a reaction like this.
Part of the fun of this hobby is saving great bikes like this from an ignoble end, chained to a fence somewhere and forgotten, or gradually being beat to death like some old gaskins beater.
That Next will last him longer than this one was going to, I guarantee it.

I have a real interesting story on how I found my first Fuji Professional but I'm hesitant to post it now.
Custer, I look forward to seeing it all cleaned up and back in its glory.

I haven't looked for serial numbers or dates yet. We are actually in the middle of a pantry renovation, and the original "get" happened on a Home Depot trip. I have only been able to spend a few minutes with it since I got it. Looking at the catalogs, I'm guessing it's a '73.

Great story. And the responses in this thread are great too. I'm still smiling and will come back to this thread for more enjoyment.
The bike is OK too. The story, priceless.

It is missing one pedal dustcap and the pump, and the pedal clips.
I ride a 58, and this is a 22 1/2 so it's a hair small - but rideable. Hopefully I can start getting it cleaned up tonight after I lay some floor.
This has Mavic clincher rims on it - I actually have a matching set of Mavic tubulars laced to the same hubs, so I might throw them on this one - either way, I'm pleased. And a NEXT Powerclimber costs 89.99 + tax. I tried to talk him into a hybrid, but he wanted the NEXT, so there you go - I think everyone ended up happy. Sadly I sold a Puegeot hybrid (that I paid $10 for) last week. I probably could have traded even up.

That's a 73'...you can tell from the capellas. They supposedly have more value than some of the others because of the scarcity of the lugs. What I'd really like to see is the seatlug cluster. It is the same model as mine. The chroming on mine is excellent, as is the paint. The frame details...not so much.
I COULD be mistaken, but those don't look like the original NR levers...they look like Weinmanns, but it's hard to tell with the poor photos.
As it is now:
I do have the original pedals and NR mech. in a box. I used nicer bars than the stock GBs because I thought they were so cool and the brake levers aren't original, but are the correct year and model.

No one cares
Weird that every '73 International I've ever seen had been stolen from a bum.
