What's happening here?

Perusing the EekBay, I ran across this stuff. Are things getting out of hand? Is this stuff worth it? Or, Are these items another case of dealers just trying to jack up the market prices? Only two of many examples. I just shake my head.

Sellers can set any price they want, but does stuff like this really sell? I reckon they're fishing ... eventually someone will take the bait.

Lot's of crazy prices on C&V stuff in eBay...
Just check out Edco BBs, Mavic stems and handlebars, Campy C Delta calipers and parts, Weird thing is, a lot of them don't even sell, so what's the point in offering them for auction in the first place and slapping on crazy prices??

All it takes is one desperate person who wants it NOW and they hit paydirt. Not everyone is poor.

It seems someone pretty regularly tries to sell a new Falcon 5 speed freewheel as "vintage" with a staggeringly high price tag.
https://cgi.ebay.com/Falcon-Freewheel...#ht_1561wt_754

My local sporting goods store sells a BSO with this part for less than this eBay offering.

I see the fishing aspect. Like you say, all it takes is one person. And I can see it on genuinely rare parts. Mavic stems, maybe? Those Gaslo bar plugs I coveted that went for way more than I could justify. I suppose if a set of NOS Nuovo Record pedals goes for two fifty, a single ought to be half that. But ONE straight-blade skewer for a hundred and twenty bucks! Like that guy on ebay who keeps listing his Motobecane Grand Record for nineteen hundred dollars. I mean, this is not good for our "sport". Are we facing a day when parts for these vintage bikes, or the bikes themselves, will no longer be "affordable"? Of course, with some Campy parts, it's already too late. Maybe I'm naive. But I think I'll hold on to my spare set of straight blade skewers, just in case.

The parts are only worth what someone is willing to pay, not what some nut-ball seller decides to ask. In other words, the market is established by the closed auctions (and then, not very precisely since a single auction reflects only what a single buyer was willing to pay at that very moment), not by for-sale prices.

Yes, true enough Neal. Thanks. I'm secretly hoping that single skewer doesn't sell. Just because I think it's an affront to my sensibilities. But what do I know.

Good catch. D stands for droit, which means it's French-threaded.

I sold a couple of Campy Skewers for about $14 each on Ebay. I also sold some Campy pedals for $116. That made up for brake calipers, levers, and derailleurs that went for half what I'd consider a good price.
I also sold a good condition Sachs 7 cog freewheel for 99 cents and a Terry Georgina bike w/Dura Ace for $125.

New ebay fee structure makes listing free. So if you have to list it 50 times to hook a sucker, the seller is not out much.

Better French than Italian where a lefty would be sinistra, or sinister as a reverse translation.

In France the Lefty's just have to move around carefully to avoid the rest of the population. And not step on their dancing partners feet.
