freewheels - why do I keep collecting them?
I have to admit I have a problem with collecting more freewheels than I can use. I have a 1980 Basso and 1975 Fuji Finest that I keep trying with various freewheels and gear size combinations. I have part of my collection below. I have several Sachs, Suntour and Shimano. I really like the look of the classic Suntour, but they just do not shift as smoothly as the Sachs and Shimano.
I am currently using a Shimano Dura Ace MF 7400 on the Basso and a Shimano MF TZ06 on the Fuji. I am using SRAM PC 850 chains. These combinations shift really well.
Question is, does any one else have experience is using the older Suntour freewheels? What chain is best for these freewheels?

I don't collect them; I unabashedly hoard them. I (hope) I have alot of years left, they wear out, and they are not made (well) any longer.
I do the same with cup and cone bottom brackets, for the same reasons.

I kind of haphazardly collect freewheels, based on opportunity & suitability, for the same reasons given by balindamood.

Hmm. I think we're onto something here. I don't save old brake shoes, tires, and other wear items. But I do have a collection of junk freewheels. Now why is that?
What's weird about timber_cruiser's collection is that he cleans his!

SunTour freewheels are not particularly fussy about chains. I've used SediSport, Dura-Ace (UG), SunTour, and SRAM (7-speed) chains with good results.

I never had a problem with SRAM chains and SunTour freewheels. Though I have to say, I have a couple-three Dura-Ace freewheels and it's impossible for me to imagine a smoother shift than I'm getting with those and SunTour Cyclone rear mechs.

Somewhat of a threadjack, but which freewheel in your collections emits the most satisfying clicking sound? To me the Suntours I have just don't click as well as the ones from France or Italy. I have this Merveille 5 speed that the click is music to the ears! So deep and solid sounding!

I like the quiet ones, like Shimano and the old SunTour Winner.

Guilty, just check my website. Of course it did not help when nlerner gave me his entire collection of neglected orphans and ftwelder gave me his spare cog and spacer collection. Had to go out and buy a shelf and bin system just to begin sorting the whole mess out!

I really like the Sachs Aris Freewheels, 6 and 7 speed. They shift really smooth.

I have 15-20 including, Sachs, Dura Ace, 600, Suntour, Campy, Suntour Microlite, Regina and a few others. I also 15-20 tools including one for the Campy and an ultra rare 6-prong for the Suntour Microlite.
I collect them because I cant sell them for anything worthwhile.....
You'll nenver get a Suntour to shift like any of the others becaue thy have flat teeth and unevene spacing between gears. I've always used Sachs chains (now SRAM) on them but a nice Shimano HG chain should work well.

I have a plastic bin full of freewheels, many have been dismantled, cleaned and serviced. I had purchased a group of old SunTour freewheels on ebay some time ago, recently I got all those serviced, with a little surprise. One of them was stamped "M", indicating French threading.
I think a huge collection of spare freewheels can only be a good thing.

Well, of course it's a good thing. I just don't know what it's good for.
