How Not to Hang a Rear Derailleur

OK, I was looking for pricing on a Univega Gran Turismo, and found this one in San Fran. This bike would actually make a decent part out, guy used some nice parts to cobble together this one.

Notice the canti studs? And I think that is a TA crankset. And the Bianchi wheels, and 105 STI.

Craziest collection of parts I have ever seen.

Wow! Well, that's one way to ensure lots of space between the upper pulley wheel and the freewheel.

He must've hung that RD like that on purpose because for the life of me I dont know how someone could do that by mistake.

Chris_in_Miami 06-20-11 08:27 AM

Some knucklehead drilled the dropout for the small claw bolt!

khatfull 06-20-11 08:47 AM

Max cog = 45T? :)

frantik 06-20-11 09:16 AM

lol i knew it was gonna be this bike.. it got posted in the wacky CL thread earlier and i even commented on the RD claw to hanger install

jimmuller 06-20-11 09:51 AM

And then there was the recent thread by a guy who found a Peugeot w/Simplex RD but missing the claw mounting bolt. He was wondering why the RD didn't sit right. On average they both look pretty good.

Makes me think - Could I get a bigger gear on the back now>>>

Let's hope he didn't destroy the hanger threads with that hardware-store bolt, too!

What is brazed on the chainstay, is that factory? Im guessing some kind of anti-chain slap mechanism, never saw that before.

realestvin7 06-20-11 12:44 PM

Somebody willing to facilitate this for me? I'm not kidding. I have no desire for the brifters if that helps.

Is that whats left of a spare spoke carrier? I'd heard of such creatures, but never saw one.

Gotta give Shimano credit yet again. Campagnolo stuff won't work if you don't have the specific parts that work together(from what I've read). Here you've got what appears to be a 9 speed MTB cassette, 9 speed brifters, and a random department store bike derailer(from Years ago?) hung in the ****tiest way possible and it shifts(you'd assume)... I'm amazed at this set-up, whether it shifts Well or not.

Looks to me like it would be great at saving your chain-stay from chain slap.

it is indeed a chainslap protector , I've seen them on a couple bikes I can only assume they'd work great.

cycle_maven 06-20-11 01:59 PM

Truly wacko rear der mounting! Probably has a little chain skipping under load.

Sell the brifters and brakes on fleabay, restore the bar-end shifters and canti brakes (and get a real derailleur for cr***sake), and it might be an OK bike.

realestvin7 06-20-11 02:12 PM

I want a tourer like this so bad.

You can climb a wall with the right freewheel. At 2 miles per year.

I guess someone with mad brazing skillz could take a triple crankset and attach it to the freewheel on this bike for the ultimate granny gears.

wrk101 06-20-11 02:40 PM

I doubt much of that RD hanger braze on is left. This bike is probably destined to having a claw hanger, which is so sad, but it will work fine. If it was closer, I would remove all of the modern parts, and return it to its original configuration. My size too.

Those modern parts would more than pay for the bike.

That's why I want a facili-tater. :D

Like all other parts of the country, we have cyclo goofers that will do such silly things.
By the way, we prefer "San Francisco", "SF", "The City" (used locally) or "Bay Area" when referring to our city.
"Cisco" or "San Fran" does not sit too well with most "natives".:D

i doubt most people in Milpitas care what people call San Francisco

cudak888 06-20-11 04:38 PM

Fill the hole with brass, tap the dropout with a helicoil or a VAR dropout sleeve (derailer hanger repair kit CD-13000). Problem solved.

markk900 06-20-11 04:48 PM

+1 Kurt - was going to say something similar. (Actually, depending on the damage you might be able to get away with just the heli-coil in this case)

OldsCOOL 06-20-11 04:52 PM

I still cant get over the trouble to mount an SIS RD on that.....that.....thing.
