Its Wacky, its Sad, its Craigslist Chicago

Chicago Craigslist has gotten silly. Everyone and their brother are trying to sell anything to make a buck.

So here is the Fuji I sold a couple weeks ago. I think the only original part is the headset. This is the bike I put together for the Velo-Cheapo contest last year. Cranks are mismatched with a BB spindle that is too long. All the black parts you see on the bike are spray painted black. The saddle is about to disintegrate. There is no front brake cable. And the real kicker is I repainted it with a brush.

Pristine original condition? New tires? less than 500 miles?

Really sad when you think of the slime ball that is selling this. I got what I wanted out of it, but my faith in humankind is tainted when I see this stuff.

I dont care that he is trying to sell it, its the approach thats disturbing. But perhaps that it is so blatantly false will keep it from selling.

Although the description is false, at least he used big pictures that reveal the true condition of the bike. The pictures will save someone a trip.

I try my best not to sell to flippers as it almost always turns out bad. There is a guy here in Toronto who puts up very dishonest ads looking for bikes. Stuff like "Looking for a bike for my son and I to ride for a charity ride" and "I want a bike with shifters and brakes in one, is this possible for under $400?" which he then very quickly sells for a profit. Sad, really, to play on people's emotions for a few bucks.

I don't think your story is as bad but yeah, his ad is rather misleading.

NYC if full of these clowns. The bigger the price, the bigger the story on how the bike was acquired.

I have no problem selling to flippers. It usually means I screwed up on pricing, which is my fault, not the flipper. I have also bought quite a few bikes from flippers, where they "screwed up" on the pricing. Three are in my keeper fleet right now, and all needed work, so I didn't just repop them.

I do get a kick out of some of the C/L email crap. Had a guy looking for a discount, as he was a "missionary". I was already selling the bike under market, he wanted another 50% discount. Bike sold in an hour, shot him an email, he replied back: "yeah, I knew it was a good deal". I felt like asking him whether god told him to go out and screw someone on a bike deal that day, but I left it alone.

I also get some of that nonsense on ebay: "I'm buying for my scout troop", or "I am buying for a disadvantaged youth team". I just tell them I keep my charity work local, so I just donate to the local scout troop instead.

I've emailed a few guys like this asking them what size they are looking for and they have almost always responded "Size doesn't matter to me, do you have pictures of the bike?" which of course means that they are trying to flip. I keep note of their email addresses (and the guy I mentioned above) just so that I don't inadvertently sell something to them by mistake.

This happens everywhere and is depressing.

I think big chainring should make an ad calling the guy out. That's just me though. I enjoy that sort of thing.

No point in making callout ads, it just annoys everyone and clutters the section. I just wish there was a way to prevent people from reposting their same overpriced crap day after day for 6 months.

Thank you all for the informative posts. I admit to being slow on on the uptake regarding buyers like these. I had an adult trike for sale on my lawn during the annual neighborhood street sale, and several people approached me with stories, such as "My son is developmentally disabled", or "I can't ride a regular bike because if anything else happens to my arm, it will have to be amputated" (the speaker here indicated a long scar along her biceps). They each told me this in conjunction with a request to lower the price even further. I declined to do so only because it was the first day the bike was offered for sale, but it was my kids who told me "Dad, they're just telling you that to get you to feel sorry for them and lower the price."

In this case, I really doubt they were flippers, but still wanting something for next to nothing.

I've never sold a bike to another flipper, because no one can make much profit on my rehab'd bikes. (Including me )

I sold a womens frame fuji ATB for 70 dollars. I listed for 90, and one person bit, but I sold for 70. It was tuned up, new cables and housing, but didn't need any other work. I see it on CL for 175, and it's been reposted about 8 times. Sorry bud, I knew what I was doing.

bummer... ad was pulled.

yeah I hate missing bikes that I REALLY want, for a good price, then see it relisted for 2X what it was listed for... there was one of those cool dark hot pink Miyatas that was ripe for a 650B conversion, but I missed it in this way. But the classic bike world is full of the one's that got a way.

Sometimes you dont know they're flippers. I know a few of my bikes have ended up in the hands of them but if I advertise a bike for a particular price and I get my price who am I to say what the buyer can and cant do it with?

I've all but abandoned Tampas CL, we have a few full time dealers on our list.

I called him and asked about the bike. He says "Its all original, but the parts were upgraded. Frame is original, but its been repainted"

So, its in pristine original condition with less than 500 miles on it, with all new upgraded parts and a repainted frame. The guy is an idiot. Its going to take a long time for him to sell it, and if he gets back what he paid for it, he'll be lucky.

Bloody hilarious. I do not think "pristine" means what he thinks it means. I suppose it is technically accurate that the frame is "original", but I would be interested in seeing a bike that does not have its original frame.

Images from the listing, before it disappears again:

(pristinely missing brake cable)

(pristinely brush-painted frame)

I had a nearly daily ritual where I'd flag the same 3-4 ads on Minneapolis CL. Guy had been advertising the same bikes at the same price daily for, crap, must be going on a year.

He finally gave up some time ago, I haven't seen them listed in at least a couple months
