1984 Peugeot P8 help
Just got into cycling and have a 1984 Peugeot p8 carbolite 103 road bike. I believe it's a p8 model but definitely carbolite 103 frame. I took off all the original components and now want to convert it to a beater/everyday single speed/ fixed. First question.. what is the size of the bottom bracket and is it possible to use a shimano bb-un54 for replacement? also what are some inexpensive, long lasting cranks i can start with?

1984 is right on the edge of the swiss bottom bracket era for Peugeot. Hopefully yours is past that experiment.
From Miami Jim's website:
"Bottom brackets can be either French, Swiss or British threaded. Left = adjustable = non-gear side. Right =
fixed = gear side.
French bottom brackets have 35x1 threading thats right hand threaded on both the adjustable (left) and fixed
(right) cups
Swiss bottom brackets have 35x1 left handed threads on the gear side (fixed) and right hand threads on the
left (adjustable) side
British bottom brackets have 1.370"x24 threading thats left handed on the gear side (fixed) and right handed
on the non-gear side (adjustable). 1.370" diameter threading converts to 34.798mm while 24 tpi converts to
a pitch of 1.058"

Is there a pressing reason to replace the crank? Are you sure that in a year or two you won't start wishing you had gears? You can always just remove one chainring from the original setup, no?

+1 Just don't shift, instant SS, no swiss bb compatibility can of worms, zero cost. If the bb is swiss, I would put it back to original, service it, sell it, and find another candidate. If its not swiss, then you are home free!

I picked up a 1984 P8 I believe in March. I was planning on converting it to a fixed gear beater, until I discovered the French headset and I believe what is a Swiss BB. Couldn't even just swap out chainrings because the BCD of the Nervar crankset is an odd 122mm I believe >_> A defining mark of the Swiss BB is a ring along the circumference of the cup:
