Anybody know if it was Masi, Pogliaghi or someone else that first applied the "signature" transfer to the top tube?

Knowing that Italy appears to be a "small world" in regard to race bike builders, I would not be surprised that all three previously mentioned used the same graphic designer for a time, maybe the transfer maker being the connection.

Thanks for the images, it really looks like a great find. CdM has stated at some point that there are/were a umber of small builders that are not seen outside of Italy. Aside from that notorious Maasi.
Maasi might be the best designed I've come across...he puts Alberto to shame.

Alberto lost the plot. The Prestige graphics saving one version of the head tube transfer just were not up to the past level of aesthetics and or execution. Some folks are not demanding enough, or don't know any better.

A few more pics for you including a fuzzy iphone image of the fork crown tangs. I'd like to thank CdM for providing me with some imformation localy relevant to the bike, tomorrow morning if time permits I'm gpoing to try and track down one his leads. Along with his information and information given to me by the seller hopefully I'll be able to get more details as to its history.

My fiancee's cousin is hesitant to drop the bike off at a local dealer for shipping so I'll be taking care of that when I return in September. I did take alot of hi-res images with my digital camera which I'll upload when I get back to the States.

Sorry to hear about the circumstances(Your fiancee's Aunt), but what a great way to find a rare piece.

It looks like it's been in a time capsule. Very nice story, with a great bike to back it up. Nice find, Jim.

There was a recent thread about the acquisition of a 'grail' bike being about things more than just a frame and a groupo. This story is pretty much the definition of a grail acquisition, and if you can actaully meet the maker, who can top that. I know you're not in Italy under the best circumstances but you're there for your family and you're obviously putting your family matters ahead of bike related things(where they should be), its also just really neat that your fiancee spotted such a bike for you(she's a keeper). Where could you even get those shoes and helmet? Great story. Cant wait to see more pictures when you're back home.

Cool bike! I don't believe though those lug cut-outs are a Natalini design, they are from the lug company, including the BB cut-outs.

Dang.

I didn't see anything like that when I was in Viterbo a couple years ago.

Beautiful city, though...

Thanks for the kind words (and to all others as well). Yes, it is a time capsule and its unlikely its been ridden or moved in the last 25 years. Suprisingly the tires are still good, they're soft with no cracking.

There wasn't much biking going on but yes, it is a beautifull city. We visited a few towns and didnt seem many cyclists, while visitng Orvieto I did see a couple 'team' style riders.

The first few pics are the street where my fiancee spotted the bike and it hanging in the gentlemans shop, it should give a good overall fell of the town. I've added some hi-res pics as well, sorry for the dupes. Of note are the nice thin lugs and fork tang detail. The stem is kind of cool because the 'natalini' pantpgraphing appears to be almost freehand.

I'd say it has a full pre-CPSC Campy Record group with a 'Pat 81' Super Record RD, the crankarms have no date codes and Sr style rings, a SR seat post, the shift levers and FD band have beem milled, and the previously flat QR levers are hand curved.
