Why aren't these Sugino cranks on Velobase?

Are they too cool for school?

Anyhow, these are my new babies. Gonna go on something dadgummit.

We're waiting for you to post them there, that's why!

Nice cranks, I've seen them before but never owned any.

Pretty much this. I haven't had an opportunity to add them! :) Feel free to register for a free account on VeloBase, if you PM me your VeloBase log-in username I will upgrade your account so you can add those cool looking old Sugino cranks. Else, I can add them with your photos if you provide your approval to do so.

Alright. Let me clean them up first. :D

Pe-cursor to the Sugino PX if I remember correctly. My PX crankset:

Because they're overpriced for C&V . . . much better to buy some TAs or Stronglights that were the original anyway.

Overpriced? Compared to TA and Stronglight? Really? Shed some light for me.

Fender, your crankarm is mounted about 165 degrees off in relation to the chainrings. In relation to the position the rings are in this photo, the arm is supposed to be pointing upwards, parallel to the seat tube.

are you saying that just because the chain rings are stamped 180 degrees from that location?

Zaphod Beeblebrox 07-13-11 08:43 PM

I've always wanted a Super Maxy to go along with my Super Mighty and Mighty Tour cranksets.

And I've never seen that one before. Fix those chainrings and get some pics for Velobase.

I"m so off, I'm on........where is the guide for chain ring orientation for these cranks? (Not being a smart as*)

I don't know that there is one. It just doesn't look right unless the crank arm is sitting opposite of the mlarge chainring opening.

Lined up with the markings on the rings, in the case of the Sugino PX, with the arm covering the markings. That is the only position that places the two of the chainring's spider arms at exactly 90 degrees to the crankarm, as on realestvin7's Super Maxy.

TA Pro 5 Vis cranksets, on the other hand, are designed so that the logo sits on the first spider arm to the left of the crankarm line:

Look for the one bolt in the 5-bolt 50.4 BCD bolt pattern that is perfectly centered with the opening in the chainring above it - this is the bolt you line up the crankarm with.

^^^ Ok, now I get it. Fix will happen shortly. Thanks for the heads up!

ColonelJLloyd 07-14-11 09:31 AM

Did I mount these correctly? And does it matter (functionally) in the least?

You're good.

ColonelJLloyd 07-14-11 09:35 AM

I had no idea there was a right or wrong way. I just centered the chainring logos opposite of the crank arm.

MrEss 07-14-11 09:39 AM

That's so shiny! It'll be really useful if you ever need to shave while on a long unsupported tour. :-)

Zaphod Beeblebrox 07-14-11 09:43 AM

It doesn't affect the function at all, its just one of those things like orienting the hub so that you can read the hub brand through the Valve stem hole in the rim when you build a wheel.

Catnap 07-14-11 10:19 AM

it's on Velobase now :)

The local co-op has a vintage Maxy Cross at the bottom of the box but only the drive side. Nice looking crankset though. (if anyone has a non-drive side arm in red, let me know!)

Good luck with that. Now, if you want to send me that drive side... :D

Ummm, Catnap, while I'm glad you took the initiative to get the the Super Maxy added to VeloBase, I can't help but notice that you have uploaded realestvin7's photos without giving proper credit to him as the source of the photo(s). There is a reason the 'Source' information is required on photos uploaded to VeloBase.com. Realestvin7, I'm going to update the photos with the correct source ("BikeForums user Realestvin7" unless you request otherwise). You are still welcome to upload better photos when you get the cranks cleaned up. :thumb:

also, fyi for all who want to upload to VeloBase.com, there's a handy little photo Crop tool built into the Photo Manager to crop out extra background and zoom in on just the part(s) in the photo. Just click on the http://velobase.com/App_Themes/VeloB...ruler_crop.png icon. :thumb:
