What a nice day for a ride.

I decided to test out my Univega Sport Tour on about a 25 mile ride today. It was a beautiful day, lots of sunshine and a small breeze. If you ever get a chance to come to Alaska, ride the trail from Indian to Girdwood. It is a great ride with lots of gorgeous views. Here are a few pictures from the ride.

I don't blame you a bit.
They say adversity breeds character, and there are a lot of people here with a lot of it.

That certainly is a big contrast. Is that Detroit? If so, all I can say is Wow!

Yes Tarsyn, it's my city.

And these are places I knew well as a young man.
Obviously, they have seen better days (like the Grand Central Train Station in the last pic) but Detroit is not a one trick town, and it still has much, much more to offer:
Unparalleled technological expertise, rich ethnic diversity and an outstanding heritage in Art, Architecture, and Music of every genre, along with a people who have a work ethic that would make Horatio Alger blush.
Also - In contrast to the ruins you see here, there are many other places of exceptional beauty (-and some great places to live, ride, and raise your kids.)

- Did I mention that there are some great deals here on old bikes as well as real estate?

I have to say it though - there are few places on earth that could rival the sheer natural beauty that is Alaska. It must have been a memorable ride!

After looking at your post I went online and did some more research about Detroit. I was moved by the images by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre's extraordinary photographs documenting the dramatic decline of major historical sites in Detroit. They are beautiful but haunting images. I would love to visit someday, I love the comercials I see on tv about Michigan. It is a magnificient state. I could very well see Detroit being like a Phoenix and rising from the ashes 'so to speak'. Thank you for sharing.

Damn, you have me missing the Kenai Peninsula now! Since we moved back to the midwest a few years ago, several friends there have taken up cycling. That segment from Girdwood on down along the water and into Chugach is one of my favorite areas in the world. Thanks for posting, you've made me nostalgic!

Great photos! Great looking Univega! The weather around my way has also been great recently, and I have enjoyed the blue skies and greenery around here much more while cycling than driving. It is almost like exeriencing it first-hand, as opposed to watching it on TV. If you haven't checked it out already, this site may be of interest .... https://www.adventurecycling.org/

BTW, I just "borrowed" your 3rd photo as my "desktop wallpaper" on my PC...it looks fantastic! Great shot! I went to Anchorage once. Looking at this photo everyday may get me back up to Alaska...the sportsman's paradise!
