sturmey archer X-RF8W which version can be fitted into a 110mm OLD?
on their website only 2 varieties are available, can I fit the 120mm OLD one into a 110mm OLD frame?
Did they ever make one with smaller length?

Probably - depends on the frame. Old steel frame? F'sure. Heat treated aluminum BMX frame with massive chainstays? No, but then why are you posting on C&V?
No, but you can narrow them just a bit with thinner lock nuts. IIRC Sheldon got one to 116mm OLD.
Did they ever make one with smaller length?

Right, the freewheel version has a fairly thick washer on each side of the axle; by removing these you can narrow the hub a bit with no risk of adverse effect. If you really need to, you can remove more washers and replace them with thinner ones or do without; you can also grind down the locknuts and that kind of thing, shave another one or two mm somewhere. The more you do of this kind of thing, the greater your risk of adverse effect. The drum brake version of the hub is wider, and if you make the axle shorter you will have problems.

thanks guys. i read here that some x-rf8w's are living happily in un-spread 110mm OLD frames. i want to do the same on my bike (steel frame) without having to spread the rear triangle.
