Update: Is This a Good Touring Bike? 1992 Miyata 700 GT

After Photos can be seen in Post #19

I rarely find anything special on Ebay, but I still like to look. When I was searching the bikes near me, I saw a listing for a 1992 Miyata 700 GT. Upon closer examination, the "Buy It Now" price was good, and I quickly made the purchase. The next day I made arrangements and picked up the bike. Much to my dismay, I immediately liked the bike! I intended to buy the bike and flip it; but when I saw the deep green paint, my heart began to beat faster. The ebay photographs had deceived me--I thought I was buying a blue bike. Once home, I made some basic repairs and took it for a ride. Sadly, it rode great! Oh no, not another keeper in my already overloaded garage. Unless something changes, I will certainly overhaul the bike and place it amongst the keepers. I think it will make a great commuter, and I may even try touring. I love the deep green color and touring bikes have me intrigued.

Although I think the bike is great, I would like to hear some thoughts on the bike. As far as touring bikes go, is this a good one?

The catalog listing can be found here: https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_whtVpXkKwl...0-h/img310.jpg

Thanks for your help!

Bob

This is the bike before I made minor repairs and cleaned it:

Looks like that may be what is was designed for. It has low rider mounts and double eyelets. The Suntour XCE was decent stuff in it's day. As long as everything works I would tour on it.

Looks pretty good to me. The unicrown fork and seamed butted tubing won't get you any snob points but it looks like a solid bike. I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen on it.

Where do you get the idea it's seamed?

That is a very good touring bike and will make a good all around bike for commuting, doing long rides, etc. If it fits and is comfortable for you, hang onto it and use it. Good tubing, high quality bike!

This bike cries out for a brown Brooks saddle with matching leather bar tape.

Just sayin'.

Thanks cb400bill! I haven't even begun to think color schemes, but your suggestion would make a fine looking bike.

Splined isn't seamed:
https://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_sp-ss.html
"Some frame tubing has internal ribs to reinforce the tube; these are sometimes also referred to as splines."

See:
https://www.miyatacatalogs.com/2007/1...alog-1986.html
page 2 and 3.

Thanks John! I was questioning the meaning of "splined." Good information to know.

I have the 618GT (I think probably the 1989 equivalent of this one) and love it. It's my daily commuter, and have done long rides in comfort on it. I'm pretty much done upgrading it to more modern Ultegra, but came with Suntour components as well. It's a great ride, if a tad heavy, but hey, I'm not racing.

Thanks zmensing! As you have rightly noted, the bike is heavy, but has the potential to be a great touring bike.

Very interesting. I hadn't heard of that before. I infer that the "splines" are reinforcing local rigidity against buckling; as (buckling aside) they are not helping from the perspective of optimum material distribution for overall strength vs weight

After Pictures!

I completed the bike and am very happy with the results! Most of the components were harvested from other bikes. I did buy new tires, freewheel, cables, chain, and handlebar tape. Otherwise eveything else is from something else. I would have liked to have kept the suntour components and bar end shifters, but the availability of Shimano parts made it a better choice for me. I would like to take it on a tour this Fall.

Very Nice! Looks like the evolution of the 1000LT.....for the touring models I believe they used to reserve that splined butted tubing for the 1000's

I'll admit black would look best.

Thanks everyone for your positive responses!

As to fenders, I'm undecided. I will be considering them. As, to color, I agree that black will work best.
