What a nice day to find a Merckx in my size.

My day really started Friday of last week. The reason is today is my birthday. It's my 52nd so I stopped caring a long time ago but this season, this year seems special because I have had some really great times with my friends (you guys) and my lovely wife and of course, my bikes.

We had a great weekend of riding all over Vermont and today, when I had really though not much else wonderful would happen and I was fully entrenched in Monday, Timmy the hoarder (AKA Timmy the flipper) calls me and says " I found a sweet bike, Eddy something" he says.

Though it is battered, rusted and will need a respray, it's the real deal and it's my size. I have the parts needed to make it whole again. Here are the "as found" pics. The rear wheel has a Hugi hub. It would have been nice to get a matching set of wheels but I have a set of DA/Campy Ypsilon wheels to replace these. I guess it's around '92 or so based on my sketchy memory.

Happy birthday, Frank! Yesterday was my wife's birthday, and it was a big one. She turned 60, so we've been celebrating every day since Friday, and I hope to do it for the rest of the month!

So damn lucky, a Merckx in VT.

The only Merckx I can remember on the NH craigslist got picked up by a Mass flipper and parted out on eBay...

Happy birthday Frank!

It's already beat. You could always just throw some nice, but commonly overlooked/undervalued parts on it and have a really sweet daily beater. At least until you get to the repaint(unless you plan on getting it fixed up right away.) Happy Birthday!

previous owner must have been a belt AND suspenders type of guy. with the braze-on and clamp-on rear brake cable guides. or is this some bit of arcane bike/racing esoterica i am not familiar with?

anyway, that bike looks like it means business... nice.

Very nice. Looks to be an early Merckx - early eighties Corsa? You might want to do some touch up paint but it's cool the way it is.

+1 frame material, lettering and rear brake housing eyelets point towards early 80's.

A great rider as is, or upgrade it; either way a sweet bike!

Thanks for the info and birthday wishes! I am pretty excited about this bike. The seat post is mobile as is the stem so I should have clear sailing. I might go over it quickly and change a few things and wait till winter to work on the finish. I didn't figure that respray comment would get by too many of you. I guess DA is out of the question for early 80's on this bike. I have been saving some Nuovo Record parts for something and I am sure this is it.

Nice score, Happy Birthday!!

That bike could be a 85 or so, does it have over or under BB cable routing? The tubing decal is probably not accurate, that is a late 80's Columbus decal and I doubt a frame that size was built with SL.

Mmm, congrats Frank! What a delightful present for yourself -- of course I mean the project more than just the bike itself. Cheers!
