    Team Fuji, is it valuable?

Well guys, I bought a Team Fuji for next to nothing, and upon closer inspection, it looks like it needs some frame repair (seat tube has come away from the seat lug at the rear). I'm wondering if this bike is rare or valuable. It came with full 6400 series 600 groupset. The strange thing though that caught my eye was that the shifters were clamp-on's, and the downtube appears to have the braze on for Shimano AX aero shifters. I don't really know the history of the bike, but it appears to be from 82-84 minus the 6400 parts. Would this bike be a candidate for a restoration? I was thinking about having the bike repainted to a more appealing color when the frame is repaired, and also adding downtube braze-on's (removing the AX braze-on) . However, I know AX is kinda rare, so would I be hurting the historical value if there is any by moding it. The bike is pinkish with a black headtube. Any other information about this bikes history would be greatly appriciated! Thanks a bunch guys!

I have specs for the 1983 team Fuji. It is nothing special. The derailleurs are SunTour ARx with BL shifters, Sugino Astron crankset, Dia-Compe 500G brakesets. It even calls for hi-tensile steel fork!

SunTour did market top mount shifters at this time, so it was not unique to Shimano's AX components. Shimano 6400 is a late 1980s group and the top mount baze-ons had pretty much disappeared by then. I supsect the previous owner upgraded when he decided to go to inexed shifting.

The top mount shifters are pretty much indicative of the era you mention. At that time Fuji was almost exclusively SunTour/Sugino/Dia-Compe, with maybe a token bicycle or two being equipped with Shimano. One thing you can do is check the dropouts. The presence of SunTour dropouts would increase confidence that the original components being SunTour/Sugino/Dia-Compe, though Fuji may have had proprietary dropouts at that time.

Repainting the bicycle, especially a non-original colour, and adding side mount braze-ons would destroy any potential resale to a collector. However, first you would have re-fit it with original components and I doubt this bicycle has much collectibility potential anyway. The other original colour scheme was metallic brown with a yellow head tube and accents, so that may be possibility, if it appeals to you.

I knew a rider who had a c-85' pinkish fuji (looked more red to me), the model was called 'sport'. It had a yellow head tube though.

A little more digging turned up some specs to the 1985 Team Fuji. Still SunTour/Sugino/Dia-Compe mix, though the components had been upgraded somewhat. The frame was a Fuji quad-butted CrMo main triangle with Valite forks and stays.

Thanks T-mar that sounds like my bike. Fuji dropouts and the chainstays say Valite. I guess it probably doesn't have any real value. Guess it might make a cool frame to mod.

Just wondering does anybody have any cost effective suggestions for the fuji's second life?

Your team sounds a lot like my Sagres (I'm wondering what the big difference may be). I'm converting my bike into a commuter. Put a rack on it, a comfy seat, and plan on putting on some fenders next (had some rain recently).

I ride mine to and from work, run errands, and take it out on the trails.
