Hi southpawboston,

With your load carrying skills I reckon you would walk into a carrier job in India or China. The bike looks great by the way.

XR2 08-30-11 07:45 PM

Yes I like the bike. Care to share some details?

Thanks! It's my Jeunet 630 converted to pseudo-porteur by addition of rack, fenders and porteur rack, and conversion from 2x5 to 1x5 gearing. Jeunet was a French production bike that was made for just a couple of years in the early 70s. Full Reynolds 531 DB frame, very light. I have a flickr set for this bike.

Is there a pic of the finished pvc rack someplace? I've been told I have two months to make room in the garage for the car.

Wow, it hurts to see that image! How I wished I had listened to my father when he advised me to lock up my Varsity 40 years ago. The kid offering to rake leaves returned that night, and took it.

Old Varsities are pretty common, you know. Get another one.

This is the inspiration behind me stopping and picking up those PVC pieces:

^ Thanks,I have been thinking of building a rack for the kids scooters and bikes and that looks like it will do both.

the bikes that i've ridden so far today are starting to pile up next to my house. That other one is my around town beater that I was leaving at the train station for a while.

From this AM's jaunt. I was originally headed to Pebble Beach, but the WxSW wind along the shoreline changed my mind, so after rounding the peninsula I doubled back and headed for cover along the rec trail.

Was heading out to ride after a long day in the car for work today when my wife pulls up and says "uh, who's taking the boy in for his meeting?" Crud, there went the ride (I'll go the gym instead). However, I had to organize and clean the shop/office since some company will be staying in it this weekend. Suddenly I thought I'd be safer with a lock on the door so my wife doesn't come upstairs. There's still four bikes (including 2 projects) downstairs.

today started with a ride on my beater to the coffee shop to do some work. Mid day was a jaunt on the "Taylor" to run some errands. It ended with a 35 mile ride on the xtracycle with my son to REI. It was mostly on a bike path next to the schuykill river. Notice how where I'm riding was under at least 10 feet of water a few days ago, from Irene.
look at the dirty leaves:

getting dark coming home. The last few miles of the path are through the woods and was pitch black. Good thing I had a headlight.

My daughter and I stopped to watch the bats over the pond as it was getting dark yesterday. It is really hard to photograph bats in flight. Still....

I rode to the hospital at the top of a big hill. There's no bike parking there, so I tied it to a bench.

Hurricane Irene knocked down trees, which pried up the sidewalk rather easily. Here, the tree is chopped off the base, but the sidewalk repair is going to be a job. This is near my home.

Had a group ride to Cooper's BBQ for lunch. Coming back to the bike shop, we had to go through the tunnel under the train tracks which led to this interesting effect.

OK kind of the antithesis of C&V, so don't taze me :). I actually remembered to bring a camera with me and took my son to a local MTB/cross festival on a BoyScout camp. I had wanted to demo a basic 29er to see what all the hype is about, as well as scope out the C group cyclocross race to see if there were people as slow as me (it seems that there are :) ) We also watched the 7-8 kids MTB race, which was a hoot. The girls pretty much crushed the boys, which my daughter just loves...now we need to start looking for a 20"MTB for her. My son wanted to do the 11-12 race, but we had time pressure to get to his football game.
I got to demo a Specialized S-Works hardtail 29er. Simply amazing compared to my nearly C&V bike. It felt like it weighed maybe 14 oz, and allowed me to scale vertical cliffs in the big ring. Not sure about Sram shifters, or if it's worth more than my car, motorcycle and all my bikes combined, but still quite a ride... My son demoed a full-squish FSR, but likes his own bike better for some reason (good for my bank account).
