A little duct tape should fix that.

I hope you were not too far in to the ride before it happened.

jbchybridrider 07-11-14 06:54 AM

I only noticed it while cleaning for the coming weekend. I finished the last ride with a long fast XC down hill with lots of jumps so likely very lucky it didn't explode. I think I'll cut it open to see how they make these cheap frames.

jimmuller 07-11-14 07:12 AM

jbchb, should we recognize the "paint" pattern on that? Which is to say, what kind of material is that? CF or painted aluminimumium or steel, you know, the real stuff?

jbchybridrider 07-11-14 08:27 AM

Yes it's that horrible ugly stuff that's not meant to be spoken of here but should make steel riders feel proud and safe with there steeds.... and provide extra ammo against the 41, or use to be the 41 ?

That sucks! It doesn't matter what material it is, it's no fun to discover one's ride is damaged and a write off. :(
From the looks of the photo, that abrasion may have been the cause. An impact that may have created a stress fracture under the scratch and it spread under load later.

jbchybridrider 07-11-14 10:21 AM

Yeah it sucks and right at a time when I feel I'm spending to much on bikes. It's only fallen over a few times taking photos so must have happened then, I've never had a crash on it "surprisingly"

Is that a seatstay? It's probably an easy repair. I could repair it with some carbon fiber wraps and epoxy, though it would look ugly. Someone like Calfee could fix it perfectly.

Thanks for saying that, I didn't think of it but should have. I'll look at how to wrap it myself and do the whole seat stay and thicker at the break. It should work because the stay only gets a straight compression force.:thumb:

Thursday morning (7-10-14) got in some miles before a day of mind numbing meetings. Nothing like the high desert at dawn.

91 Ed Litton. 37.2 miles, ~1700' of climbing (42-26 was marginal for these aging legs)

Robofunc 07-12-14 02:25 PM

Seriously intense sun. Getting back on the bike after 2.5 weeks of vacation in Portland is killing me.

Mehhh....not much scenery here; nor a decent photo. Just a rest about ~17 miles in on a ride today. My first road bike. Got it a week ago (first order of business is to get a longer stem and change handlebar tape to black....previous owner, a super nice fellow, converted to STI...fine by me, works great). Those old Wolber rims are still kicking it beautifully.

That's a very nice bike. Welcome to the party!

ThirdCog 07-12-14 11:19 PM

Thanks Sir_Name. It's ridiculously fun, although, it's probably sad because I am a weak engine for it (for now). It wants to get up and go!

I picked up this Schwinn Super Sport (my first ever electro forged Schwinn) today for $30 when i noticed it listed on CL about a mile away.

My plans for it is to get it functional while keeping it ugly and leaving it at my office in NYC.

Nice, looking forward to seeing it spruced up.

Weren't supersports actually fillet brazed CrMo steel? Should ride nicer than the Varsity I used to get around Philly during my last year of college.

Beautiful bike! Know what you mean about the heat I'm a little south of you in Sarasota.

Yeah, lotsa good my selective sticky trap of a brain does over here! Here it's all Crescents and Monarks and other weirdness. Can't even fit the pin on my crankpuller through the threads of the German crank on my weird Finnish IGH city bike.

I see the CA license plate, but the background looks like SEPA. Have you moved back to the northeast? It's been raining here for about three days, and it's days like this that I miss San Jose.

I have. The pic was taken a few days ago in West Chester, Pa (I shipped the car back with me from Ca). I don't think i've ever seen San Jose look that green :)
I'll be splitting my time between Bucks County Pa, NYC, and Bay area so my pics are going to be all over the place :)
