How to remove the cable from a 'upside down' sturmey shifter

I have one of these shifters (not my photo)

and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the cable out. It's not your usual sturmey shifter cable either, the end is round like a miniature mountain brake cable or motorcycle throttle cable.

Someone might have used a standard derailleur cable though the barrel end is usually too wide to fit inside of the trigger. But my usual method is to unhook the cable from the hub and then use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to pry up just a bit the trigger spring that the cable slides under. Then you need to either unscrew (if it's threaded) or undo the ferrule that goes into the trigger body and work the cable on out.

If this were a usual 1948 and newer sturmey shifter I would agree with you. But this is from 1945 or so and it's not the same inside as the later ones, the cable does not push out of it's seat in the ratchet from the back. In this one, the lever somehow needs to be rotated past the low gear position to allow the cable seat to line up with a cutout in the back of the shifter. Then I can get the cable out. The problem I am having is figuring out how allow the lever to rotate further. I'm stumped.

Would disconnecting the hub end work?

no, I'll try to post better pictures tonight. It's hard to explain but maybe I just need to look at it again.

Figured it out - the back of the shifter was bent, so the ratchet couldnt rotate far enough. No pictures but I am definitely going to have to recycle the shifter cable because the chance of finding another is pretty much zero.
