1979-ish? Motobecane Grand Jubile
I'm very excited to get this - I haven't received it yet and hopes this doesn't jinx things. An apparently 1979-ish Motobecane Grand Jubile. Most parts appear to be original with the exception of Suntour Superbe rims laced to unknown brand double-wall 27" rims and a six-cog freewheel. I don't know if it's standard or not (not - according to the 1979 catalog) but it also has a Nervar crankset. I've included a shot of the serial number just to see if anyone can provide me with any particulars, esp. if anyone knows if it has a French or standard headset and Swiss or standard bb. Thanks. I must admit that the photos are the sellers and not mine.

How did the OP determine the bicycle's vintage to be 1979? I found a near identical M GB at the Dump and after researching the bike, serial number and most importantly, the components fitted, I determined mine to be 1978...
Anyway, I have found my M GJ to be a wonderful bicycle, sporting a surprisingly rewarding ride quality. Nice bike and enjoy.

Very nice bike. Saw it on eBay and the great condition it was in but way too big for me. Good buy!

1. According to on line 1978 catalog, the GJ came with Bocama lugs.
2. I picked up a GJ mixte last week, the Suntour components are mid 1977, and the specs match the 1978 catalog.

Triple crankset is not original.
Swiss bb.

I thought the red-on-black ones were 1976-ish (or am I thinking Grand Record?). I just built up a 1978 (bought frame from original owner) that's siiver-on-gray (with the curly Nervex lugs). I also really like the red-on-black; though I'd take a black-on-red if I could get one. Vitus 172 tubing is earlier than ones with R531 -- and lighter. I'm not at home now, or I'd check the serial number for you.
- So I was under the impression that Vitus came later (albeit it it may have been spec'd earlier too for all I know).
The '78 the catalog specified Vitus :

Vitus came later. The early M GJs (74-76) are 531 frame with hi-ten forks. In 77 they switched to Vitus 172. In 78 they switched to the Bocama Pro lugs. The Moto catalogs for most years are on line at bulgier.net

Thanks for the Bulgier info. I guess I don't have a '78 - my fork is Vitus 172...must be a 79 or later.

It looks like the color was available for a few more years. thanks to bulgier though, I think I have the year pinned down. It appears that Moto went back to Simplex derraileurs after 1980 and started messing around with different tubing sets, so based on the 6-cog freewheel, Nervar crankset, and Moto-branded bars (as well as Vitus main tubes and fork), it appears to most closely resemble a 1980. Oh...and the frame had brazed-on water bottle cages after 1980 - which mine does not have.

My Moto GJ is a 77 with full Japanese components including the drop outs ( SunTour ) and it is 531, as far as I can tell it is the first year with full Japanese components and a 531 frame the 76 was partial Japanese & 531 and the 78 was Vitus. Below are a few pic when I first picked it up.
