Changes made :

-replaced those crappy 'prestige' shifters by Hurets.
-replaced Simplex FD (broken clamp - what's new eh!) with Huret model.
-new 'retro' saddle to replace original bum-basher.
-clincher wheels
-usual stuff like cables, chain, bar tape, top tube cable clamps (originals rusted), bottle cage (Original rusted too)
Simplex RD looks as good as new, so no change there.

The colour is really hard to photograph; it's much more vibrant in reality! All in all I'm very pleased with this purple beauty.

thanks for the compliment! The saddle is branded 'Ducas', made by the 'Velo' brand. Search ebay for 'ducas saddle' or 'velo rivets saddle'; there are several versions of these, not the real thing, of course, but at least you don't end up broke (checked Brooks, Ideale, San Marco or any other vintage saddle prices lately?:eek:)

An Austro-Daimler Maxima, just the right size. Built in 1982. Bought in Peoria a couple of weeks ago. Still undergoing thorough testing (riding around) as to why it is so fantastic.

I had one exactly llike that, same size, same colors. It was a great commuter. Last year I gave it to a friend and the first thing he did was paint it black and red...

less than 2 miles from my house i was spinning down a hill, hit a SMALL bump and the chainring snapped as i was on the downstroke, chain gets lodged on the spider where there used to be a chainring, then the chain dumped off the cog and then got lodged inbetween the cog and the dropout and pulled the whole thing into itself

(it was set up as a fixed gear at the time of its demise to put that into a little more context)

to think where chip has been, climbed mountains, ive been hit by a car on it, in blizzards, 100+ temps. 4000 miles later it was my own legs that destroyed it.

rip. 1987-2015.

@Mumonkan - Sorry to hear about Chip. Seems like he was a trusty friend.

I do have a question for you. On Chip's pedalroom page, it says the front hub is a "Sturmey Archer 70mm Drum". I looked at the S-A front hub page which also mentions 90mm hubs. What do the 70mm and 90mm designations mean? I would expect most any bike we ride nowadays has 100mm fork spacing. It's not at all clear to me what other measurements would be meaningful in this context.

all is well, he led a good life. i have no idea what he went through or what he saw the 26 years before i literally found him in the street like a stray dog but i had plenty of adventures with him.


re: hubs;
70/90mm is the diameter of the drum brake, just like a disc rotor

i.e. 90 would give you more braking power over the 70mm

OLD spacing is the same as any normal hub at 100 front vs 130 rear (they have drum rears too, which i was gonna use for a new wheel build for that bike. but only 70mm)

drum brakes dont give you a lot of power and a lot of times have a pulsating feel, but theyre completely unaffected by weather since theyre encased inside the hub. they also make 0% noise. great for commuting bikes.

Just picked up this '91 Schwinn Paramount PDG Series 3. Not quite a "true" Paramount, but the ride is butter smooth, and the RX100 Components run through the gears like dominos. Sadly though, my work schedule I'm on currently means she'll be spending a good bit of the next couple of weeks on the trainer.
