I love my local thrift store -- Vintage Trek content

I had seen this sitting outside where the store preps incoming donations a couple of days ago. Today it was still sitting there, but I saw the dock manager so I asked him if I could see it. After some negotiation, it came home with me.

So far Vintagetrek.com shows it to be a '78 TX500. The faded Ishawatta sticker would confirm it, but man check out the build kit.

Full Campagnolo NR drivetrain (shifters, FD, RD, crankset, cable guides)
Campagnolo Record hubs laced to Mavic tubies
Campagnolo Seatpost and seatpin
Suntour Superbe brakeset
Cinelli bars/stem (Crested Giro D'Italia bars)

And the part I like most, a center mounted Jim Blackburn rack in silver. I've been looking for one for front duty on another project.

I thought some people might like to see the craftsmenship on the brazing so I took closer pics. Also shows how far the rust is spreading. Terminal?

It's a 24". I'm 5'10".

After riding for most of the last 8 years on 55-57cm frames, going bigger has been great. My go-to bike is a 60cm Bertin, to go with a couple of similar sized french beater projects. I just had a 26" Superior I tried to ride, but it was just a hair too big. As long as the TT isn't biting too hard.

Wow, that is one lovely color, on such a beautifully built frame! Congratulations! You definitely did extremely well! I've never had any luck in finding anything at a thirft store. Several moths ago there was a mid range Cannondale at the salvation army. Those crooks wanted 400 for it, about the same as a new one at a bike shop! Lol! The oxidation does not seem to be all that bad on the frame. All that Campy is pure icing on your cake! Congratulations again, it has just such a phenomenal vintage look!

Is the head badge copper?

The head tube looks longer than I'd expect with a 58cm top tube as indicated in the catalog.

Awesome score. But that is the tallest 24" I've ever seen. I think you might be trying to pull one over on your 5'10" self.

that's definitely (at least) a 25" Trek frame. If it don't fit, there are plenty of Trekkies that will die for that one.

I am 5'9" (maybe a tiny bit taller) and I cannot imagine being able to stretch to make that frame work even with the seatpost all the way in the tube like it is there.

Edited to add: Nice score!!

The headbadge on my '77 TX300 is solid brass, I believe this one is also. They polish up easily, but the paint comes off just as easily.

Outstanding score Dylansbob, I love your thrift store too!

This is the same thrift store that provided me with this Fiorelli a few months ago and about dozen boom-era parts bikes.

If my wife decides to watch a movie this afternoon, I'll have a chance to rebuild the Trek to a more practical (for me, at least) choice of parts.

Good find. One of may favorites is my '78-1/2 514, but you get a bunch of campy bits. Very nice.

After pic:

I spent a few hours yesterday, stripping and cleaning, then rebuilding the Trek with parts that work for me a bit better. I did find one small dent on the downtube. Everything came off easily and there was no rust inside of the BB or frametubes. After an application of Framesaver, I rebuilt it with a Takagi forged triple and some unmarked rando bars and some old clinchers.

For people curious on sizing, the post and bars are now positioned to make the bike fit me. I'm planning on taking it for a grocery run this afternoon, but on the short ride I took last night, the fit looked dead on. With my hands on the ramps, the stem clamp obscures the front hub perfectly. With 28mm tires, the TT is just touching on standover.
