Okay, here you go:

This person is a wizard at working with leather !!!
Here's the website, in Japanese. (I think)

https://www12.ocn.ne.jp/~hishikaw/index.html

He even shows you how he makes them !

Okay, you can start drooling now.

I'd love to know how he molds the leather for these (over a form he made or just over an old lever body?) as well as "how much for a pair"?
Here is the information he sent me with the photos about making the leather hoods:

"I decided maybe I could create hoods in leather…. That was a whole new experience for me. I learned (through trial and error) how to form the leather over the brake towers, and after modifying the pattern many times, I still had to learn how to sew them. I went through several prototypes before I got a pair that was acceptable. (I also created a mock tower in wood that will allow me to continue forming hoods to improve both the forming and sewing techniques. Otherwise, once the hoods were sewn onto the brake levers, I would no longer have a tower to practice on.)"

Thanks to you both for the info. Makes me want to give this a try myself, but will have to wait for more time to experiment (so many projects). The Japanese gent's work is perfection, I'd be more than happy if I could do half as well. I like the Lotus guy's sewing better: don't think the front seam looks "comfortable" in the JP items, though I'm sure he does it for a good reason.

I just started restoring a pair of Campy aero hoods last night. Got a can of the black Plasti-Dip spray.
The hoods where not dried out but where wearing very thin in spots and had a few small tears around the front edges.
I used superglue to bonds the tears before spraying.
Two coats applied so far and it looks very good. Build up is quick and even.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion, you saved me about 50 bux.

I bought a set of leather hoods on Ebay .. for my Suntour Superbes.

I was flabbergasted when I was the only bidder! Not cheap, but no more than some of the original rubber models. I understand they come from a craftsman in Japan, perhaps this one:

https://www12.ocn.ne.jp/%7Ehishikaw/p...A%AE%90%AC%95i

I could drop him an email in Japanese, perhaps we could get an order together for C&V. I understand it takes quite a while for them to be made.

Scott

I was thinking one can do it on a set that's just starting to dry/rot out and maybe arrest the deterioration permanently(?) as you will keep air off the hoods for good.

They make it in clear.

You are a godsend! I was just looking at my MAFAC's and thinking dear god where do I order replacement hoods. Mine have the plastic handle covers though, so I may try taping off the lever housing and also coating them to go from white to black.

Hi RaleighSport,

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm finding that the "Plastic-Dip" is very durable. They make several other colors in spray form, including white. Please post some photos of your results.
PS. I use to live in the Emeryville artist lofts area and really miss the beautiful Bay Area.

Stopping by home depot tomorrow going to try black first, if this works right I can always change back to white later.

Just wanted to add that I discovered a possible solution to the deteriorating rubber hood and grips situation. The Plasti-Dip method may build up the thickness more than desired.

I had a pair of Gripshifter with their grips turning to goo. Similar to the brake hoods...very sticky and coming apart as you try to clean them.
I used Dupli-color's Urethane Bumper Cover paint. It contains a flex additive to keep the paint from cracking. I applied several coats of flat black. Upon drying, the rubber grip is no longer sticky, didn't crumble apart, and stayed pliable. Nothing came off onto my hands.
I will be trying this 'fix' on some Dia Compe and AME hoods soon.
Can't guarantee any long term claims, YMMV. But it did curtail the rot and stickiness.

Thanks for the tip!. Maybe bumper clear coat might work for gum colored hoods then??
