Vintage Family Photo

This is a picture of my Grandmother's - Grandfather - John Harvey Murrell, Born in 1880. I thought I'd share. I was excited to know I wasn't the first wheelman in the family. I have no-clue how to explain his left foot on the right pedal.

If anyone else has antique images of family members on bikes ... please share.

Very cool photo.

If I'm not mistaken, old photos required long exposures and the subjects had to stand perfectly still the whole time. That may have been his choice for a comfortable/stable position to stand for the photo. Just a guess.

Great photo. I wonder if my family has anything like this. I'll have to ask my mother about it.

Great image. I wonder where he was going to? What's in the suitcase? Is that his family seeing him off to some new destination or new job. Such an interesting photograph, do you know any of the background to this image and gathering of the people in the image?

I know nothing more about this image aside from it being taken prior to him marrying. I don't know the setting or the other people in the image. Ole' John Harvey looks dapper though.

On those old step through bikes you ride side saddle.

Here's my dad in the mid-late 40s;

I've got an incredible one of my grandmother from the early 20th century. I'll dig it up and scan and share it here. Glad you posted this because I'd forgotten all about the photo until now.

My Avatar is a photo of my great grandmother and her cousin in the late 19th century, so not only a wheelman, but a wheelwoman in my past. I also have another photo from 1920 of a great-great grandmother being chauffeured around in a type of thre-wheeled Bakfiets that has been fitted with a rattan seat for her.

Old bike related photos are wonderful but where a member of your family is in the photo you want to know more about the circumstances that brought about the photo being taken.

That sure looks like a slanted top tube to me... but that would never be the case for a vintage frame.
