Schwinn "California" model
While looking for a small road bike for my son, ran across and very good conditioned Schwinn California model.
I have found only 1 website saying it might be rare, but thats it.. So its peaked my interest.. Is it worth anything...rare?

Not rare...they sell those at walmart! Where is it at? Let me go take a look to double check! :-) My question is, what are you doing here instead of having that bike already in your home? It definitely seems rare, so buy it research later! Hurry before someone else get's it! Thanks!

That's a Caliente. Not rare, and not valuable. It should be ok as an entry level road bike, but the brakes are pretty bad. Coupled with the steel rim, it will be a bit dangerous in the rain.

What's with all the gold-digging newbies in this thread?
Rare ≠ valuable or collectible. Even the OP has/had a Schwinn California Cruiser, it is just another a run-of-the-mill Schwinn cruiser frame with a different chainguard mounted to it. I see virtually no mention of it at the Schwinn forum - the collectors over there are too busy concentrating on the Klunker 5 (which had its name shot down in the same fashion as the California Cruiser) to realize that they've missed out on another oddball.
For the record, that California Cruiser photo that Scooper found online shows an example with a horrifically bent steerer tube. Just for the record - before folks start believing that's the way the fork is supposed to look.

Not to be a jerk, but the thing says "Caliente" right there on the top tube. "California" and "Caliente" are pretty different words.

Yes, but you can't see the entire word. I think the OP guessed at the model based on what he or she could see. An simple mistake if you're not a bike nerd.

+1 That actual California has a badly damaged steerer tube.

Not sure if that was directed at me or not but I hope it was not....
I was just looking for a road bike for my son, saw this, called, owner looked at the pic same as me and said its "california".. I said ok, googled it to see more details, found a website saying it rare.. So I come here figuring you guys would know for sure...

I see no problem with the responses. That is all they are responses and opinions. Xring, that is unfortunate that it was not the bike that you thought it was. But if you like vintage bikes, keep looking you'll find some nice ones. Best of luck to you!

If you can get it cheap it'll work just fine for a kid who may not take to road bikes and will certainly out grow it in a couple of years.
