1960 Raleigh Western Flyer found in dry cellar.

according to the code on the rear drum, this is a 1960. It's followed by the no. 8 and there' s "WA" in front of it. It has a Western Auto Supply Co.bade on the handlebar post. also the nos. 02871 NA on the saddle post. anyone tell me more about this bike?

Hmm. Doesn't exactly look like a Raleigh to me. What I can see of the rear fender looks more like a Phillips to me. Can we see it from the front with close ups of the front fender and headbadge area?

Hey, welcome to the forum! I am the guy who you have been talking with on flickr. Yes, the fender is fancier than a typical Raleigh but the dropout eyelets have Nottingham written all over them. Glad to see you post, there is a real wealth of knowledgeable and helpful people here.

+1 Sheldon Brown is great. Here is a nice crash course on English three speeds, including a bit about the Raleigh dropout eyelet placement. Raleigh was a HUGE company eventually encompassed many of the ubiquitous English brands. Companies like Reynolds, Sturmey Archer and even Brooks I think were all part of the Raleigh operation.

Here is the picture that led me to say this was Raleigh built:

Even has the Sir Walter Raleigh pedals:

A lot of features point to a Nottingham build.

8 60 means August 1960, the date of manufacture of the hub. The hub type is no doubt AW, the wide-range three speed that Sturmey-Archer made in the millions.

Hmm. Chainring looks just like the one on my (Nottingham) Robin Hood. Pedals are a giveaway. The AW hub is a really amazing piece of work.

Check Sheldon Brown for the pedals and brake parts https://sheldonbrown.com/raleigh.html. The pedals look circa ~1970 as they have reflecors and seem to be riveted on the inside. Earlier pedals have no reflectors and nuts so they can be rebuilt. The brake cable looks to be ~1976 or later as the caliper has an anchor bolt.
Earlier brake cables have molded ends and no anchor bolts on the caliper. It does look to be a Raleigh built. I'm just getting into this English 3 speed thing so I'm no expert. Perhaps this is a lower end model that use parts not destined to the Raleigh line until economics changed.
I just picked up a 1966 Raleigh sport in rough shape. It has the molded cable and block pedals w/o reflectors. I also have a 1973 women's Raleigh Sport, 1975 Raleigh Folder, and today I just picked up a 1981 Raleigh Tourist with brake rods. Here's a couple of pics.

Best thing to do is to host your photos elsewhere, such as flickr or snapfish or whatever. Then put the url in your post with [/IMG] after it and [IMG] before it.

Wow, you are just getting into English 3 speeds and you already have a great collection...nice work. Have you posted pics on the "For the Love of English 3 Speeds" thread?

(Edit: I see that you did post on the 3 speeds thread.)

Western Auto Raleighs are documented on page 200 of Frank Berto's book, "The Dancing Chain".

The basic story is that in 1963 Raleigh stiffed Western Auto at the last minute after several years of relationship. Westfield Manufacturing bicycle factory was recently purchased by a management group and had no customers. Sturmey Archer refused to give a good price on 3 speed hubs so Westfield (which became Huffy) went to Japan and met with Shimano. Westfield/Huffy was able to fill the cancelled Raleigh order at Western Auto's price. Put Shimano and Huffy on the US map...the rest is history.
