Almost bizarrely, and with an irony that's not the least bit humorous, we're facing epic flooding here in south central PA as the Susquehanna crests following unbelievable recent rains. The building where I work at Hershey Medical Center shut down yesterday afternoon in the middle of ALS clinic, and has not yet reopened. It's the worst water we've faced here since Agnes in '72. Not to take anything away from the OP's situation, but just thought it remarkable that the same winds from Lee that are fanning those Texas flames are part of the weather system that's dumping water on us here. (I have a brother in Austin.)

Zandoval hasn't checked back in, has he? I've got a slightly sick feeling starting to creep into my gut like a diseased cat crawling under the front porch. Hope I'm wrong.

Such a shame. We seem to have endless rain and they have a lingering drought. They need a water pipeline, not an oil pipeline.

Same here. All of july and august nothing but rain, rain, rain all day. September thus far too, but that's normal.

Hoping everything will turn out OK for zandoval, and all the others involved. Very tough situation to deal with.

For an idea on the speed of fire, read Young Men and Fire, gives you an insight into what it can do, and how fast.

Young Men and Fire is a tragic, tragic story and well worth the read.

Cold Missouri Waters by Cry Cry Cry

My name is Dodge, but then you know that
It's written on the chart there at the foot end of the bed
They think I'm blind, I can't read it
I've read it every word, and every word it says is death
So, Confession - is that the reason that you came
Get it off my chest before I check out of the game
Since you mention it, well there's thirteen things I'll name
Thirteen crosses high above the cold Missouri waters
August 'Forty-Nine, north Montana
The hottest day on record, the forest tinder dry
Lightning strikes in the mountains
I was crew chief at the jump base, I prepared the boys to fly
Pick the drop zone, C-47 comes in low
Feel the tap upon your leg that tells you go
See the circle of the fire down below
Fifteen of us dropped above the cold Missouri waters
Guaged the fire, I'd seen bigger
So I ordered them to sidehill and we'd fight it from below
We'd have our backs to the river
We'd have it licked by morning even if we took it slow
But the fire crowned, jumped the valley just ahead
There was no way down, headed for the ridge instead
Too big to fight it, we'd have to fight that slope instead
Flames one step behind above the cold Missouri waters
Sky had turned red, smoke was boiling
Two hundred yards to safety, death was fifty yards behind
I don't know why I just thought it
I struck a match to waist high grass running out of time
Tried to tell them, Step into this fire I set
We can't make it, this is the only chance you'll get
But they cursed me, ran for the rocks above instead
I lay face down and prayed above the cold Missouri waters
And when I rose, like the phoenix
In that world reduced to ashes there were none but two survived
I stayed that night and one day after
Carried bodies to the river, wonder how I stayed alive
Thirteen stations of the cross to mark to their fall
I've had my say, I'll confess to nothing more
I'll join them now, because they left me long before
Thirteen crosses high above the cold Missouri waters
Thirteen crosses high above the cold Missouri shore

The water came within 3 blocks of my moms house in Endicott, NY. Absolutely epic flooding.

If he hasn't checked back in, it could be because he is overwhelmed. I certainly hope it's just because he is busy. Hoping for the best.

Wildfire update: it's 70% contained, over 1500 homes burned down. There are only 2 people listed as missing at this point. Heatwave came back this weekend (reached 105 today in Austin). Residents were allowed to start returning today as power is being restored. Schools opened back today I think too.

I too am worried and feeling uncomfortable that Zandoval has not checked back in. 1500 homes burned!? I hope and pray that his was not among them. Such a tragedy in these difficult times. Hopefully he will check in here soon and let us all know what the situation is.

It's probably just tough to find internet access and this isn't the first things he's going to be checking on.

And it's a scary feeling, but I can only relate to a tiny degree as we had a recessed light that smoldered a beam in our attic. But seeing smoke come out of your roof with the fire department cutting a hole in the roof is never a relaxing experience. Good luck, man. Good juju being sent from my direction.

My morning paper opened with a pic of Bastrop yesterday, it looked like a scene from hell. I hope your home has been spared, zandoval.

wow, so great to hear at least some good news out of Bastrop. I have a coworker who's north east
of Bastrop, he's thinking his place is gone.
unfortunately the wind is supposed to pick up today, with 105 degree heat, predicted
rain for end of week and next week god willing (as my mother would say).

Oh finally, thanks for letting us know! Man that's so close, so lucky. I know what you mean (not first hand) about the "island effect". When we first moved to KY in January 74...that May, 74, was the "super outbreak" of tornadoes in and around KY, OH, TN, etc. We went through a little town about 15 miles away from us a couple days later. One house would look perfectly fine, nearly like nothing had happened, and right next door would be a bare foundation?! How does that work? Who decides? I just don't understand that stuff...nor am I supposed to I guess.

Glad you're ok zandoval....wow.

EDIT: April, '74.
