Robbie,

Need some help…was cleaning my bike the other day and noticed that my rear cassette was wobbling as the wheel turned. The gap between the wheel rim and brake pad stays constant. Is the hub damaged? wheel toast?

Thx BigRed

The font on the DT is what gave it away, as the font on the '85 is different, a "shaded" lettering that combines the "U" and "R" in Centurion.

While you do see grey '85's once in a rare while, '86 was dominated by the red and white models.
If my collector friend, who rides that size, didn't have too many bikes, I'd point him your way.

Just a clean, tight example of the great stuff available in 1986, in a color scheme I've never seen.
Very weird. Is it possible it was an unofficial model--that they used up leftover 1985 grey paint for a few bikes on what was otherwise a strict red/white year. Deciphering the date codes would tell us from where in the run it came. Interesting monochromatic contrast to the "Miami Vice" colour scheme that was to come the following year!

I've been idly watching for one for myself, either as a rider or a project. This is not the one, but it made me curious. If the title of this thread is, "For the love of 80's paint jobs," then what is the deal with this solid silver example?

This has been very difficult to Google as one of Iron Man's suits is called the Silver Centurion. Culture is weird!

1985 model. Centurion didn't go with the parachute pants version of bike graphics until about 1987, with the introduction of the fades.
That is one smooth frame, though, and one great price, and my size. I've got a 9-sp DA group just sitting here.....

I like the silver/gray one a lot better, and don't have time/gas/inclination to go to Santa Cruz. They pop up here in Sac at the normal rate and I'll find mine eventually.

That 1985 model has the Centurion Turbo/Comp TA stylings of the preceding years. Those are my favorite!

I have an 85 just like the frame pictured. It is a Joy to ride! I've been riding my CAAD10 more as of late, but rode the Ironman over lunch today. And after just a few peddle strokes I was thinking why did I ever buy a CAAD10? Just a joy to ride!

Here's my '86, bought new. Still stock except the stem, saddle and pedals. Plus consumables.. Haven't ridden it for 5 or more years. Until today! Been riding '90s steel hybrids and '80s touring types. All with bigger tires/heavier rims, longer wheel bases. Cut some time from my '30 minute' route without trying! Same heart rate/cadence but a higher gear so ~2 mph higher average! Bought this for aerobic exercise after riding the '85 RockHopper for a while. A coworker (obese, heavy smoker/drinker) had a stroke @ 37y/o! and at 34, I figgered I'd better git fit.

Works if I use it.

Here is my Ironman in it's natural habitat. Sadly I have had to accept the fact that it is just too small for me. With the seat post and stem maxed out, 60cm is still too small. I have been riding it for weeks now and wish it were the right size. May have to send this one back into the wild and try to track down a 62cm or 64cm. Unlikely to find one in this color with a frame that is as nice as this one.

Everything on your lovely Ironman above will move right over to this taller (albeit earlier) Ironman frame:

Oh my that is a thing of beauty. How have I not seen the ad before? Ultimately I am looking for a really good Miami Vice frame in my size to do a modern Shimano 5800 105 upgrade on. I was going to use the bike above, but wanted to ride and make sure the frame fit before upgrading. I'll send you a PM on the one you have for sale. Maybe I'll use it until I can track down the color I want in my size. Can you ever have enough really nice Ironman frames in your size? I think not.

Hey all, first post and just joined the bikeforums family. I'm actually pretty active on the BMX Museum site since I decided to jump back into that scene as a hobby a couple years ago. Was active in BMX racing before I transitioned into triathlons, which leads me here... Wanting to build my "grail" bike from when I was mad into triathlons, which was of course an 87-88 Centurion Ironman Dave Scott. I raced a Cannondale SR400 but always wanted an Ironman.

I've actually been able to source an Expert here locally but am still waiting on it to arrive, from what I can tell it isn't going to quite fit the bill of a complete build based on condition but it has the Look pedals and Scott DH bar I used back in the day. Not a bad start...

Anyway, will be posting a want to buy ad here soon, for a complete or almost complete 87-88-89 Expert or Master in 58cm. Not really looking to compete so much as relive some teen memories and finally own the bike I always wanted. Will most likely be selling a GT BMX racing bike to fund.

Love this post, will keep coming back!!

Aren't racy bikes great? Years ago I went from a knobby MTB to a Cannondale CAAD6 and it shaved ten minutes off a 52-min ride. Ironically by comparison to you, I sold that Cannondale when my own health problems cropped up. I regret it!

BMX racing to triathlons?
Channeling Dave Mirra?

There are also period-correct bars other than Scott's.
Profile Design "package" with stoker base bars, Century aeros with DT mounts, and the cut/welded FF seat post.
The rear disc cover is cloth, with plastic clips and a magnesium ring inside, with a drawstring!
Brake levers are about all that was available back then, the Dia Compes, and those are Mavic pedals.
Can't tell in the pic, but that is a Cinelli quill stem shimmed to fit the 26.0 tandem stoker bar.
I had a ton of fun on this bike. Aero is not about weight, and once settled in, you could really jam.

Sweet!!! Dig the look for sure, I had one of the forward Profile seat posts as well, holy cow did my shoulders ache the first few days I used it... yeah after transitioning to triathlons for 3-4 years I ended up running trcak and cross-country in college so the bike got set aside and focused just on the distance running. Which led to marathons and then ultramarathons, and somewhere in there my Cannondale SR was sold or given to a friend or... don't quite remember what happened, I think I blocked it out just in case I ever regretted it (and do for sure)...

I'm now 42 and still active in ultras but wanted to get a little nostalgia back. I am giving my 24" Redline Proline bmx cruiser to my son now that he's a bit big for his 20" for long rides, which gives me an excuse to get me a Centurion...

49cm 89 master (suntour radius frankenstein) just need some pedals and bar tape. it is stickered up by a local bike shop, they must have been the ones responsible for the odd components. nothing is as it should be, even the wheelset (from a suntour gpx expert).

i just finished putting on a 100mm nitto stem and changed the handlebars to 39cm.
