Post your Centurion Ironman.. For the love of 80s paint jobs!

My newly aquired 87. I tore it almost completely down including chain rings and thoroughly cleaned. (Crank arms and headset were left on). Now need to wrap bars and purchase saddle. Was gonna go yellow wrap, saddle, and cables. But now leaning more toward white. In 86 I tried to figure out what in that ad made me want that ironman so much and besides the classic colors I noticed the bars and saddle were the same color so I always match them. I know vintage has a number and classic kinda subjective but I believe classic can be defined as can be put in any modern decade and fit in . So in that respect this is not a classic to me. However what it is, is one sweet ride! I love this thing. Shifting is flawless, and it tracks really well.
One thing I gotta say it reminds me of a song you didn't care that much for, back in the day. But now sing out loud and know every word. A sign we're getting older.
It's completely stock as it stands. I will get the wheels trued and tensioned. It's a 56 cm I named five-0. A little big but makes me feel like a kid (in a Lotta ways)when I ride it.
So to tally up: a 54 cm 86 "classic" call sign boss man,56 cm 87 Miami vice call sign five-0,52 cm Yellow fade (banana split?idk) call sign maverick (it's vintage and futuristic). What are the call sign for your bikes? Later.

How it looked when I picked it up. Mostly dirty. Wheels need a lot of work.
Jetboy, love that tenacity.

Looking good! Whatever you do, @texaspandj, do NOT get rid of those white hoods!! Clean them up with some simple green or 409, then dust them with talc/baby powder to keep them from being sticky if needed. They are hard to find at reasonable prices to replace.

i have the same white hoods and they were so nasty simple green.. even at full concentration would not clean them - acetone sort of worked, vodka sort of worked, in the end used paint thinner got them white again.

Here's my 88 before adding walmart black cable housing, bar tape, bottle cages, and mini pump. (looks good maybe I should have left it.Ha)
I personally don't have too many material goals except getting a corvette convertible before I kick the bucket. And now owning the same color scheme of every centurion ironman that was advertised in triathlete magazine. (Pics to come)There's the classic r/w May 1986. The Miami vice Jan 1987.The purple haze Jan 1988, and the hard rock Jan 1989. I've got the classic standard, and Miami vice. Need to get the other two. Everyone has their way of saying it but I like Bruce Lee's version: "In every object pursued, the pursuit counts more than the object" Later.

I started biking as a triathlete. Swimming and running also for that matter. I learned to swim properly, learn to love running, and biking was my favorite. But swimming was my weakness and biking was my strength. I wasn't a fast runner but I was a strong runner, meaning I could run hard after the bike leg. All the content in my treasured triathlete magazines motivated me. I'm probably still stuck in 80s. Best decade ever....so far.

hahaha. yes. but not really- I put the one from my Pinarello on my red/white and put the black one in the Teal so it matches the Quill now. The pinarello is all stripped down for a repaint and when i build it back up ill be getting a different seat post anyway- it has been asking me for an aero post.

I finished up the build of the frameset I mentioned in this earlier post. I was able to find some Sante brake levers so it is all Sante now on the new bike. Here is a photo.
I picked up this 'Miami Vice' f/f/hs today. I currently own a complete one but it was just a little on the small side. The frame I got today is a bit bigger and fits me better. My current Ironman has Shimano Sante components. I plan on swapping the parts from the smaller frame to my new frame. I am then going to sell the frameset or build it up and sell it. Both are in near perfect condition.

From March 88 a shimano ad. Check out that carbon fiber done up in yellow fade. And from June 89 ad. That's not Dave Scott on that ironman but Mike Pigg. Probably the best non drafting international distance triathlon cyclist ever (including when lance raced triathlons). Mike would click off low 50s 40k bike leg then run a sub 31 min 10k. Amazing athlete and super nice guy. Maybe I need to put that carbon fiber ironman on my list. Ha.
Markwesti, those tires make your classic look as light and fast as we know it is.

Hey Tex , Centurion made a CF frame ? Also I see by the first thumnail Dave is talking about SIS DA, interesting . Yes Tex, classic . I like that term. You were asking about that the other day I meant to post to it , but yeah I like classic .
I was really having a hard time finding a pair of vintage tires and after looking in three LBS's I looked in this guys shop and found these tiny 19's. And bonus they are slicks !

Pretty Dave Scott. Mind if I ask what you paid for it? I just missed out on a local CL sale, almost identical bike but with everything in good shape.

I also just found a pic of my last Miami Vice Ironman. I ran it with 8-sp Campy and Vento HP16 wheels, then changed it up.
Of course I wish I still had it, but I turned it into a tri-bike, and a certain Apple VP races it over there on the Left coast.

Here's my Miami vice and Dave Scott on his. Test rode mine, needs a little more tweaking. But holy moly that thing is fast. It has to be the wheels with that tire combination. That's the only thing I can attribute it to, as it's a 56 cm and the biggest steed in the stable. It tracks so well I think I could ride a train rail. It doesn't climb as well as my 86 classic (standard ) or my 88 yellow fade. But it MOVES. I stayed in the big ring most of the time. Gotta be the wheels, I'll find out tomorrow as I ran out of daylight riding loops. I love the larger handlebars. The longer crankarms didn't affect me either way. I'm running a 13-21 on my 86. Not sure what the 87 is but that may have something to do with it.
R.T. what were you thinking? What a beauty.

Centurion offered two carbon models, the '88 Dave Scott Ironman Carbon and another, nearly identical model, the Centurion Carbon. The Ironman Carbon had Dura Ace, and the Carbon model was 600 "tricolor." I dug up a pic of one of mine. Very sweet century bike. Fork was swapped for safety. OEM fork was made of pasta. It suited 9sp Ultegra very well.

Hey Markwesti, not sure of the model number but I have Shimano 105 hubs, wolber alpine rims, and vittoria zaffiro? tires on my Miami vice. Your classic should have Shimano 600 hubs(a step up from the 105) and wolber alpine rims.(a few of the earlier ones came with araya gold rims). Hope that helps. You definitely have a fast set though.
