Didn't break any world records, but I checked one more item off the bucket list! My brother is a swimmer, I am not. What I lost to him swimming I pretty much made up on the bike. It felt good to pass carbon fiber aero bikes on a steel thoroughbred.

Looks like you're good to go. Man, I've been there. I eventually found a comparable stem on ebay and felt lucky to get that. Either way that Miami Vice is worth every single penny you put in it. Nothing else like it out there.

Congratulations! Way to go. Your pics are really cool. And you look fit and ready.
Sharing an experience like that with family makes it all the better.
That water shot makes the water look cold. I have my first open water swim of the season next month. With zero water training this year not really looking forward to it.

I'd pay $400 for it as it sits. Most others, $300-$350 if they know the brand and the quality. The unwashed masses won't, because it's not carbon carbon carbon.

If you are still looking for a stem, search for a WIN/Kazuki one. Same company. High quality and they can be had for less than the Nittos or SRs. They came OEM on some good bikes of that Era.

Well,

the Miami Vice I picked up in Wichita Falls is done.

The fella I built it for is starting to take cycling fairly seriously and is putting up impressive average speeds for solo rides on his all original , slightly too small 6 speed IM - and was looking at newer machinery, but was dismayed when he tested out a '11 or '12ish base model Specialized Roubaix (alloy with Sora group ) and it weighed 23 #'s --- same as his 29 year old Ironman

I had been thinking about parting the bike out because I could use a clean 105 group on something else----- but when he told me about his experience with the Specialized --- I said "We can do better than that"




Oversize stem (w/ Profile adapter ) and wider 44c shallow drop bars -- normally not a fan of the adapters, but this combo really helped stiffen the front end and the bars give the bike a more contemporary feel -- also visible is the 105 9 speed shifters and dual pivot brakes



A nice completed build needs a cherry on top, so he got a Dura Ace 7700 rdr to cap it off



I truly wanted to use a black zero offset post for this build , but did not have any in 27.0 in my parts stash --- IT has some PErformance house brand wheels and fresh Continental folding bead tires-- as well, I swapped out the bio-pace rings for round Race Face rings and alloy bolts -- I figured that would work out better for a guy who is just now learning to spin and keep track of cadence

End result - 22lbs 1 oz -- with a dreadfully heavy post and gel seat (although the seat matches the bike fairly well)- a modern thin walled alloy post and Ti railed seat would knock off another 1/2 pound pretty handily (I've lost 200 grams with a seat swap before)




I dropped it off last night and told him that if it works out for him --- just swap me out with his original red/white 58cm and we'll be good --- building this was fun and I wasn't looking to turn a profit or anything

Also, I'm 90+% certain an '11 or '12 Specialized Roubaix would be carbon and definitely weigh less than 23lbs. Maybe it was an aluminum Allez or a Fuji Roubaix?

Plonz, the wheels are PErformance Fuego's -- they are roughly 2003 or 3 vintage , but in keeping with the 9 speed group (reportedly re-badged Alex ALX320 wheels)

-- I think your right , it was an Allez. When the gent sent me a pic of it, I had to shake my head in dismay --- was a far cry from the very nice Allez steel frames with the fastback rear stays I remember - but then again , modern Specialized machinery is not really on my radar

Weight is not much of an issue when you're on an Ironman. The real problem is keeping the women at bay.

(YEs- not an Ironman -- but at least its the right brand!) --- My younger brother wanted an Ironman back in Christmas of 1990, --- he was 14 -- my parents decided the Sport DLX model better fit the needs of a growing teen so he got a new leftover '89 model

-- fast forward 26 years -- Bro asked me about the bike as a ride for my nephew -- granted, I have already procured a couple of small framesets with the lad in mind figuring if he didn't like them, I would use parts for something else ----
- but i'm glad the Centurion has been picked to get a few more miles in -----
Its been curbed, but not severe enough to affect the handling --- I basically just need to overhaul the headset (a cartridge BB was installed long ago) - string up new cables and bar tape , and find a more suitable seat post for it and the little dude will be stylin'

I don't know what happened to the fork paint --- I'm guessing it will be easier to rattle can it white rather than find the matching pale blue shade

---- more fun in the garage !

You always find something interesting markwesti. The tri color group is excellent and worth more than that c note. Also looks like it has some bar end shifters. However the frame may be a harder sell being that size. Hopefully going to a good home soon.

I keep telling myself I don't need another Ironman, but they keep following me home. Luckily this guy was close to me and I had my offer in before you posted this. I'll post up some pics later, but this frame is in amazing condition. Now to see how it does getting along with the other Ironman frames in the garage.

Oh they are all keepers. The only one I have set free back into the wild is one that was too small for me. I tried and tried to convince myself that it could work, but it was just too small. I actually have another Miami Vice frame that I am in the process of building with the 105 5800 group from my 85 Ironman frame. Sadly it is missing the head tube & seat tube decals and has inferior paint with some possible respray areas. This one will replace that frame. Too busy with house projects right now, but it will get done in due time.

I keep telling myself no more, but when one pops up in my area, in my size, in good shape, at a good price, and in a color I don't own it can be very difficult to resist.

Just an update. My wife's 50cm "Big Red". Even her bike looks better than mine!
I've been wanting to change hers to brifters. Found these shimano 7 speed brifters on local CL for 30 bucks. Had to drive only 5 blocks to get em. I already had a 7 speed freewheel. So I just had to screw on the freewheel easy peasy...... nope. For who knows what reason I couldn't dial in the shifting. I'd get it to shift up all the way but wouldn't shift down all the way or I'd get it to shift down all the way but not up all the way. Maybe the 6 speed chain or the original SIS 600 RD won't allow, I don't know. Any guesses?
Anyways, I put the 6 speed freewheel back on and it has an extra shift in 3rd or 4th going up and down that doesn't change gears, so click again and it changes to next gear. So other than the need for an extra click, it works fine. She hasn't ridden it yet, I'm hoping she'll like the ease of brifters.
Also here's a pic of the brifter.
