Post your Centurion Ironman.. For the love of 80s paint jobs!

I searched and incredibly, there isn't a gratuitous "post you" Ironman thread... so there is now!

Post your Centurion Iroman pics in this thread.. have no shame, post as many as you like. Please mention the year and complete model name (ie Expert/Master/Carbon)

I'd really love to see at least one example of each of the different Ironman paint jobs.. it seems there were at least two or three for each model year.

Off the top of my head i know of these IM paint jobs.. did i leave any out, or get the years or models wrong?

to kick things off, here's my 1989 Ironman Master, equipped with mostly 600EX components. I need to get some newer pics cause it's got a black and neon green saddle now too

Here is an 87 Expert model, that I did some work on and gave to a friend.

I found this at a garage sale this spring. It hasn't been touched since I brought it home(other than hanging it up). It's an 85 model, built in late 84. Of all of the Ironman paint schemes, I like this one the most.

    And the fork

I'll start slow...1985. Resembling a re-badged Comp TA, with the only contrasting color being the head tube.

Came in grey/dark grey, or red/silver, (a al the Comp TA and Turbo). Fat Font also used on other models that year.
Only one model, the Ironman. Shimano 600

1986 Saw the move to the smaller "graduated" font, a change in rims, and DiaCompe brake levers with the "leader" housing. The red/white began a two-year run, and is by far the most common 1986 model. Note the seat tube now matches the head tube. The grey/dark grey model is very hard to find (this is A.Winthrop's). The later 86's had the coppery rims, as the red/white one here has. 1986 was the last year of the "standard" Ironman.

1987 saw the models split between the 600-equipped Master and the new 105-equipped Expert.
Graphics and decals were slightly changed, a little busier. The pretty sloped fork crown was replaced by the unicrown.
The coppery Araya wheels gave way to Wolber Super Champion Alpines.

The Expert continued in red/white, and the Expert also came in the famous/infamous "Miami Vice" theme.
The Master came in green/white and yellow/white, There may be other colors, but there were no fades....
(that I know of), in 1987.

Not to forget, the Terry-designed model, the salmon-white Expert, was only produced in 1987.

1988 brought out the new 600 tricolor group on the Master, and the fade paint jobs.
The Experts were "straight" fades, with one color blending into another, in red/white, green/white, and yellow/white (I've only seen one)
The Masters were in the purple "smoked" fade and the blue "marbled" fade. Wheels returned to Araya "Super Hards," a copy of the Wolber.
Of note for the 1988 year, the group included the matching bb for basically the first time that I know of, instead of Tange.

1988 Also had the Ironman Carbon, which came with Dura Ace 7400 7-sp indexed.

1989 continued mixing the fades and solids. The Master fade was grey marbled, the Expert fade was blue smoked.
The solid Master was all red, and the solid Expert was all black. Suntour GPX hung on the Experts, and Shimano 600 on Masters.

One way to tell an '89 is the black Tange Levin CD headset, and the bottom bracket was back to Tange in '89.
The Araya Super Hards became CTL-370's, so named because the rims purported to weigh 370g each.
Centurion said there was a geometry change in '89, but there has never been any proof other than what owners think.

And lest we forget, some people like their own colors and schemes....

    Incognito:

    Inyourface:

    There may be others.
    It's a phenomenon, after all.

Ironically, Alan Goldsmith, who had a hand in the design of some of the later Ironman models,
can't quite understand all the fuss. He is truly surprised by the bike's popularity.

Me, I never get tired of looking at 'em.

thanks robbie.. i didn't realize there was a blue marble in 1988 It looks like the Blue Marble in 88 has the newer font used on the rest of the paint jobs in 1989

The Ironman model name was dropped in 1990, and WSI decided to merge the Centurion and Diamondback brands. For the first few years, Diamondback brand road bikes featured prominent "Centurion Designed" decals. The "spiritual successor" of the Ironman Master and Expert are the Diamondback Master TG and Expert TG. The geometry is clearly more relaxed, but the "Master" and "Expert" names still lived on, as did the marble fade paint jobs. The Master featured 105 instead of 600.
